  1. I don't want a battle, I want a practical engineering solution so the wall can be repaired without damaging the tree.
  2. I have come across this a few times but never really been happy with any solutions. What advice would you give to a client with a retaining wall being damaged by a tree. Builders normally want to remove the trees so they can excavate rebuild. Others are will just remove the wall and cut any roots in the way. In this case the tree is protected as is the wall... I am nervous that if the wall is removed stability could be compromised but not sure of any tried methods that others might have used.
  3. I am sure I heard someone on the radio recently possibly gqt who recommended replacing box with plastic plants as box is so difficult to keep alive these days..
  4. I have a client, with some root issues. It is a private estate and they care about the trees. But is is open access and trip hazards obviously a major concern. They are planning on resurfacing the roads. The trees are very important, TPO'd and have to be retained. I have told them not to cut any roots over 25mm without arb advice, but they have a road planer going in and I am pretty sure they will just want to make if all level. Any one any experience/solutions? Is there flexible tarmac that is suitable for road surfaces? My solution would be to lift the road levels, possibly creating a speed bump like road structure. Bit even that is likely to be a temporary fix. Are there any good solutions for the footpaths as they spend £1000's each year trying in vain to keep them in order.
  5. Hmm, or you could just get a petrol saw..😉
  6. I imagine you would have to jump through all sorts of hoops for the council to give permission. But if you looked the part and were sensible about it I doubt you would get any bother. Stick on a high Viz. That gives you permission to do what you like..🙂 Especially an orange one.
  7. Canopy tree services can undertake tree condition surveys. Contact [email protected]
  8. If you are selling to a VAT registered company they won't care.
  9. I certainly consider edvit.. but that adds another level of complexity and having to rely on someone else.. When I quoted in January it was very wet and the local groundsmen said it was often like that in summer. I didn't want tracked vehicles on site digging it up, access is not great and you couldn't get an artic down to chip straight into. Our bc1000 happily chipped the tops and 4 guys with the Avant haven't had trouble keeping up with the grapple saw. Ferrying the chip to our yard has kept someone busy but it will still all get sold. I don't believe there was a bottle neck so not sure bigger machine fed chippers would have speeded up the job. We do have a big pile of wood but that will also be sold for biomas.
  10. I know the grapple saw guys promote themselves pretty well.. But we have had Wallace Timber in helping us Pollard 36 poplars at a park.. It is pretty cool.. VID-20210818-WA0006.mp4
  11. Our little Avant, 540 needs some new tyres. We are mostly garden s and domestic work so thinking about turf tyres. Any views/recommendations?
  12. Double Olympic medallist Simon Terry dies aged 47 WORLDARCHERY.SPORT He shot at three Olympics in 1992, 2008 and 2012. Simon ran Bonington Tree Services, he was a member on here and I am sure some of you will have crossed paths, or seen his Unimog and forestry mulcher about. While I did not know him well, he alway seemed like a nice chap and had a good reputation in the area His death at such a relatively young age puts other troubles into perspective.
  13. While spiking a tree that is not being removed is not best practice. It's not really an issue to one tree in a wood. Arguably the wounds will promote decay and good deadwood habitats. Using a throw line could disturb the nest and your not going to carry a ladder through the woods and even if you were would it be long enough? Obviously permission from the landowner should have been sought...
  14. If they are making a wildlife area, stop bothering them and leave them to get on with their work..
  15. I would bet money these are ecologists, or researchers of some type. Looks like they have proper kit, even looks like helmets in the backpack. I can't imagine your average nest robber would bother with health and safety.
  16. Back in the day when I worked in London we just got on with it but obviously that is no longer acceptable.. I do remember trying to wear a mask while climbing and that didn't last long. Anyone got a decent solution? or should we just wait for rain and end of summer. Guys working from MEWP or on the ground. Anyone tried something like this: https://www.screwfix.com/p/jsp-filterspec-pro-valve-respirator-black-fmp2/36021
  17. I spoke with midland springs today, they do 3 levels of spring, but advise against airbag helpers. I guess they might be biased but according to them the airbags fail and put pressure on a section of chassis not designed to have forces imposed. Will probably just go down the extra heavy spring route.
  18. Picked up the l200. Seems like a well constructed and thought out back.. Drives fine empty.. I am concerned about the weight over the rear axle.. The ladder racks a great and being able to chuck everything in the back (including the kids) made it good for a kayak carrier..

  21. Our LR 130 repair is not going to happen quickly if ever and we needed a 4x4 on the fleet, so have purchased an l200. It's not going to be a main chip vehicle and I nearly went for a non tipper but being able to chip into will occasionally be useful. What upgrades are advised. Different tyres will obviously be needed if going off road. But it looks to have potential to have alot of weight over the rear axle. Do we need to upgrade the springs? Would airbags do the job? 22. Did you make the descion to change all at the same time so you didn't have a mix of petrol and diesel machines.. Or did all your chippers need upgrading at the same time?
  23. Our 130 has come back with a big old list and quote of around £3k to get through its MOT: Still drives like it always has, a boat. Pretty scruffy inside and out. Its a 2005 TD5 with only 110K miles and we have maintained it mechanically servicing every year. We need a 4x4 but only as a back up and occasional work and could probably manage without a tipper although is useful. Would you sell as is and let someone else tart it up? Whats it worth? (£6-8K??) And buy something more modern. Patch it up for £3k and carry on running as is. Go full on restoration on it, galv chassis etc.. What would that cost (£5-10K?) 24. Rushcliffe scouts have a fantastic woodland where the scouts camp. The trees have not been actively managed and have basically been left to to their own thing for the last 40- 50 years. It is predominantly ash, with a few sycamore and an mixed understory. My kids have been camping there for years and it is great, no facilities, no running water a bucket to toilet in, hammocks to sleep in etc.. There has always been a lot of deadwood and standing dead trees and I always have a wonder round to see what they have tied there hammocks to and its not always been great. The trees probably have a DBH range of 30-75cm, tall up to 20m skinny things that probably should have been thinned out in the past. Over the last few years I have been very concerned that it is going to be wiped out by ADB and even if only a small percentage of the trees were to succumb it would become a very dangerous place to be. ADB is only really starting to take hold around here and I was up at the site last night and noticed a number of the ash trees were not looking great and there were several medium sized dead elms. The scouts obviously don't have a budget to DW or remove the trees, I don't know if it is even surveyed. What would you recommend they do? My thoughts are it might be worth getting a contractor in now before it goes to crap.. Could the timber be sold standing now while still OK and they could possibly make some money or at least cover the costs? Could a low impact contractor get in take out the ash and leave the understorey so there is still something left? If nothing is done it likely to become unsafe and a liability? There is access up a steep track and a neighbouring plot has recently been thinned, and logs extracted.
