  1. I rekon if the second ones not eucalyptus but from oz, then its probably an acacia...some sort of wattle....and if its not that then i'll eat my head.
  2. Think the second one looks like a eucalyptus with those leathery leaves and long flowers so im going for Eucalyptus polyanthemos
  3. The Red flowers look like there probably from some Acer palmatum cultivar
  4. Try Keith at K Irvine Plant he's always got load of chippers in stock of every size at good prices. He's a timberwolf dealer but always has other makes of chipper and other arb stuff in stock. I paid £4300 for a 6" 98 Entec over 3 yrs ago. 01788 510192
  5. Not sure on the legallity think your only option would be the small claims court ...but first always go round and calmly speak to them with a copy of your invoice, then if no joy or they are in dire straits give them a couple of months to pay. Then if they are w@nkers and dont want to pay use them as cheap land-fill, return with a 7.5t tipper and of load off a few tonnes of crap onto their front door garden/drive way. If anything the satisfaction would be worth it.
  6. How long before compulsory AA approved.. for insurance ,all council work and generally blowing your nose....not long methinks...
  7. hmmm not sure... apart from the bad back , white-finger, deafness, arthritis, RSI &, knacked lungs ...Im sure the options are endless...
  8. Hope thats a load of crap. Full page! I could understand a small ad but its like saying dont trust any of those others companies without our logo ......as they dont give us their hard earned cash year in year out. Im all for trade bodies but that takes the pi$$.
  9. Yeah totally Ban em off the face of the earth.. though my work load would probably go through the roof having to do countless petty jobs cutting up logs and felling weeds... HA!

    Chips

I just dump everything in one giant chip-heap and let it all decompost. Not many other options really. I wouldnt worry too much about pathogens passing from chip to plants. Though im sure theres a 'best practice' somewhere.. heres some info regarding woodchips http://www.puyallup.wsu.edu/~Linda%20Chalker-Scott/Horticultural%20Myths_files/Myths/Wood%20chip%20pathogens.pdf
  11. hard to say what tree you were on. How big were the thorns and what size was the fruit
  12. If I had the space i'd consider a kiln though as they creates so much smoke/vapour you gota have them sited somewhere remote.
  13. I like the idea of charcoal burning even tho its labour intensive, take along time and takes some practice. we briefly looked into charcoal burning for some big coppicing contracts, but we never got them so that put an end to it. Anyway save me ranting you can find really indepth detailed info on ring kiln construction in ...charcoal production 'a handbook' (amoungst loads of other complicated kilns/gasifiers- heavy reading!) got ours from treesource.co.uk. Its aimed at developing countries but covers the ring type kilns used here. BTCV 'woodlands' also do some good info on charcoal production http://handbooks.btcv.org.uk/handbooks/content/section/3768 with some of the info sourced from the above book. As for making a kiln If you know a good fabricator they could make you one from the diagrams or somewhere like 'traditional charcoal 01606 835243' sell em..i think. God know how much it will cost tho
  14. A good dealer (stihl chainsaw) could give you between 25-29% off from book price inc vat. At the mo Fr Jones & Sons have em at £409.00 inc vat George Carr & Sons were selling them at £387.75 inc (last dec tho). I Dont buy saws off ebay unless there dirt dirt cheap and expect them to be well worn/neglected with a view to repair n spares. Save up and buy new and try locally.
  15. Think your question should have been 'How often can't you be bothered to hold your top handled saw safely'
  16. If you do alot of amenity planting the definative book on the subject is 'Tree Roots In The Built Environment'. Reseach for amenity trees No8.
  17. A good climber must understands he/she is the most hated person on the team, possibly the planet.. and so has to be nice to all those whingeing moaning hard done by groundies......
  18. A good climber should have had already have spent time (a long time! ) working as ground crew so they have a much better understanding from the prospective 'down there'.
  19. A pikey using ppe and ropes..thats a first
  20. Its just practice. The more you climb the easier it gets. I cant remember (some 8yrs back) how long it took me to become totally conifdent in all my kit , but i do remeber having to overcome that trust element and my initial fear of heights. Probably a few weeks.
  21. Dont get me wrong, i'm not saying 'all' 100% of pikey work is of poor quality, only 99.99999999999999999999% of it is.
  22. yeah thats 'quality' pikey work! ... Though I i think less of them are doing 'tree work' at the mo ..as theres much easier money to be made carrying out really really poor quality bock paving ...oh and especially stealing scrap metal from churches, road signs, drain covers and the traditional wire copper thieving from your local electrician... not that im pointing fingers or anything.
  23. It a job to tell but I think its a black walnut. I cant see any terminal leaves on the long stems so it couldnt be common walnut, though many look like theyve blown away. If the leaves are toothed at all then its definately not a common walnut. The fruit looks rounder like a black walnut and the leaves too numerous and slender for hickory.
  24. In this business if you havent got public liability insurance then you should'nt be trading. Above all Pl ins is a must or you may find one day you loose everything . plus if you ever have guys working with you (even if you dont pay them!) and its 'your job' and something goes wrong..without employers liability you are totally screwed and open to being sued for limit-less amounts. How cheery.
  25. As long as youve figured the total potential load of the pieces your droping and so know working load limit of your lowering system then theres no problem using ali if there within your limits.
