  1. Chain saw Service Manual... If you like pulling older chainsaws to bits this book is very comprehensive and a must. It covers virtually every saw you can think of and has exploded diagrams and loads of very detailed info. It is a US publication so theres quite a few unknown makes, and although it only goes to 98 most of the saw are still in production with only minor cosmetic adjustments. Ive had mine 4 yrs or so and noticed amazon.co.uk are selling this book even cheaper than i paid .. £13.88!! including delivery.. its 600 odd pages long and worth every penny...even if you never take a saw to bits its worth it. ISBN 0872887057
  2. whenever ive seen guys chip birds they always seem to think its totally hillarious...and thats why i think they do it.. maybe its just the evil bast@rds ive had to work with over the years. personally i always whack them brisky on the back of the head. Works every time.
  3. Its most likely carbon deposits forming on your piston head. When i strip my saws down the tops of the pistons and chamber around the plug have a rock hard coating of carbon some of which can flake off. If its not that it could be bits of residue from the exhaust getting into the chamber when the saws not running. Both of which you cant do much about. As for dirt getting in.. unless your using no filter theres 0% chance of getting dirt in the chamber.
  4. pigeons are a pain as they breed all year round unlike most other birds and therefor its pretty common to find nesting birds especially in large leylandii. We try and reschedule work if we find songbirds ..many which are on the decline. Though sometimes it too late and well were not perfect. As for chipping birds, thats just lazy and idiotic. Its your typical **** for brains knuckle-scraping attitude from your average brash dragging donkey. Period.
  5. Ive used HP Super on all my saws n hedgecutters for the last 7 yrs or so and prior to that used HT plus bio which it replaced. The reason I moved from the red was du to the stinkin smoke and smell i hate mainly when hedgecutting. Plus it offers better lubrication and reduced wear which ive noticed especially on my HS 80 which has to be 'the' most abused hedgecutter in the uk and although the blades are beyond sharpening needing replacement, after 6yrs use the engine is still runs sweet.
  6. well its not really food but i take glucosamine supplement as most people in this line of work end up knacked at the end of their career. Anything which could prevent or slow down osteoarthritis must be a good thing. And after 4 months of taking it my knees no longer crunch and i definitely dont ache as much.
  7. Those students who come to the workplaces with all the right 'tickets' but a seem to lack some confidence/general allround ability is mainly down to the fact that all arb courses (at least college courses.. nd's.. certs..diplomas ect) only cover practical assesment as a small part of there curriculum. The real learning and experience can only be progressed in the work place. This applies even more to someone who has just spent a a few weeks becoming a climber, chainsaw maniac.. whatever..yes they know all the basic cuts / climbing techniques (though have probably forgotten them) , but without sustained practice over and over again..watching others and seeing how a team works together..then and only then will they become good. I dont think altering nptc modules will change much apart from more annoying numbers to squash on the back of my id card .
  8. Who makes decent kit/rope bags??... Ive just replaced my husky bag cause it fell to bits after two weeks use and now the new ones starting to disintegrate. The stitching is a load of sh!t and the bag seems to be designed to carry no more than half a pack of walkers cheese n onion. Up until now ive used an unbranded fishing kit bag which lasted years.
  9. Im happy with timberwolf. There fairly bomb proof. Even my old 1997 ENTEC CH30DH runs perfect. The kubota engines are really reliable and the only major bit ive changed have been a new fly wheel (last yr the bearings went)and some splines went one of the hydralic rollers. Not bad considering it was a hire machine before I got it.
  10. managed to get the bloody thing out after making a groove in the head (really arkward bastard job), heating it up with a blowlamp and then whacking it constantly all evening until started to move round...and thank f@ck it did! eventually..
  11. Ive just stripped one of the torx bolts while changing my chipper blades on my timberwolf ..DOH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Managed to slip off the bolt and eventually totally round off the inner. Any ideas how to remove it as its totally rounded.
  12. Not sure (probably as they can measure the moisture loss themselves). Ive always sealed the ends with emulsified wax to prevent splitting and cracking from drying out too quick. I think the rough rule of thumb for seasoning is around an inch of wood a year ...so its gonna be a long wait for some bits... unless i plank em with one of those Canadian mills saw attachments
  13. yeah i was thinking of something similar trying to flog it to woodturners
  14. Just wondered if anyone made much dough from flogin their 'nice pieces of wood' to local woodyards etc..ive got yew and laburnum, spalted stuff n bits of burred stuff we've kept over the last few years in various lengths. In fact any prices for any wood ....just so i know im not being totally screwed ..though im sure prices vary loads cheers.
  15. Anyone know where to find a cheap copy on the web or when the revised version is gonna be printed as i dont wanna shell out £70.00 odd quid and find im 18 years out of date.
  16. Thanks for uploading your aa risk assessment.. I needed to update / modify my version and yours is perfect. Job done.
  17. I use a green wheel and also a 4.5 inch diamond covered wheel on my angle-grinder so I dont have to take the teeth off to be sharpened ..and used with a small generator can quickly sharpen the teeth on site when they get abit dull.
  18. I use both TW and 'identical copy' Saturn machine blades and have done for the last 4 years and have found no difference whatsoever in blade life wear. As for blades cracking well maybe those made from a mix of milk bottle tops and solder wire and purchased from some door to door traveller might... otherwise its total bullshit
