  1. I’m not being arsey im just in confusion about what PTO chippers have to do with tracked ones … two completely different tools and nothing to do with the OP. i could not get a tractor in half my sites for most the year anyway and if I did the clients would not be happy about them sinking up to there axles.. then do you put on turf tyres to loose traction but not destroy the ground… the foot print of a tracked chipper is virtually zero and then there’s the factor of loosing the will to live driving a tractor and all faith in humanity with the selfish twats on the road who hold no regard to the vehicle your driving … every time i take mine on the road, it’s not something I enjoy or would want to do for a few trees , maybe different if I was chipping 200 tonne with a heizhack.. the cost of a decent tractor too to even get the thing to site would be 40k
  2. I don’t understand your point ? Are you saying that every 8” machine out there that people have been using for years are underpowered or we should all drive tractors 50 miles to a site ?
  3. Since getting a tracked 8” the road tow has sat in the shed and not been used.. but we very rarely do any domestic work and the tracked comes in to it own for every thing we do I’ve found , even if we did a domestic job I’d rather have a 8” tracked than a 6” road tow for through put alone.
  4. Would definitely go 8” and get a winch fitted , I know jenson offer a hydraulic winch which is ideal as it can be used through out the day where as electric is limited to a few pulls but means you can recover your self in woodlands or winch yourself off the ground to get the track back on if you have anchors around you. I run a tracked Schliesing 235mx and would not look at anything else but maybe the jenson. I was working along side a tracked 280 the other day and it did the job but still felt like a tw … had a top speed of around 20mph as well😂 dunno if I would trust any lads with it in the woods , slow and steady wins the race !
  5. Had a few air rifles over the years but out of the pcp ones I owned a 2.2 ultra was my favourite, it stayed the most constant in accuracy and power .. even over and no one else will agree but the s410 I had at the time too… they are a very good value for the money gun.
  6. You know if you take the stihl bar and put it along side the echo bar and mark the tensioner hole drill the stihl so a standard stihl chain fits right on… which is available pretty much anywhere and saves the hassle of finding chains with the extra DL is what I’ve been doing.
  7. I never found better than 8mm armour prus for longevity and performance with a VT hitch
  8. Cloggers without a doubt are the least warm of any saw trousers but as stubby says are not ce marked…. And bloody expensive!
  9. Continuous Cover Forestry | SILVICULTURE RESEARCH INTERNATIONAL SILVICULTURE.ORG.UK No book , but a good read if you have not already… and links to reading material.
  10. Been on every night for the last two weeks, maybes three
  11. Don’t forget the Russians started it with ze Germans … they where not the only ones who wanted more territory or the idealism spread … I genuinely think if the Russians had not lost the millions of men they did they would of carried on in Europe but as it was they got all of the eastern part.
  12. That’s how Russia fights wars though mate so I do not think it bothers the population or leaders…. they kind of expect to be still fighting wars like it’s 1945, life is cheap and they certainly have no regard for it. I think there is a very small percentage of the Russian population that does not feel this way though but not enough to make a difference.
  13. I don’t know what it is but why does half the country think they have a right to park where they want and trespass … I had two lads turn up light up a fire and start cooking , now bearing in mind that it’s private land there’s no right of way and there is signs every where saying no fires I had a word … about an hour later after I had found another dumped BBq dumped in the river and a load of burnt shit and rubbish on the bank. when I got back to my truck, I was confronted by the same guy telling me he had all cleared up but I’d really ruined his day … I did wonder if he was retarded ,but it gained on me that rules or laws don’t apply too two thirds of the population as they clearly feel they have a given right to do what they want when and where they like… also turning up to a job on sat morning and with the third load of timber just loaded on a guy turns up and was very disappointed I was taking it as he wanted it , despite again being on private land whilst watching his dog shitting at the entrance I asked him if he wants to pay for this load of timber and I’ll drop it off for him … I can leave to your imagination his reply but I’m getting sick of dealer with folk who think they can do whatever they want when they want and **************** everybody else.. this thread is kind of up there and makes me realise why my blood pressure is getting so high.
  14. Looks bolloxed to me … the ratio of live to dead growth is around 65-35? They will look good now as they have only just flushed and dragged up stored energy reserves and put out new shoots … saying that I have dead wooded some and they haven’t looked any worse two years on but they never had the tip due back like the one in your photos and don’t forget it will effect the tree in many different ways from roots to shoots.
  15. Thanks … I may have a go on some.
  16. What do you mill it for if you don’t mind me asking?
  17. Probably , I’ve had 5 pints and can’t see with hay fever.
  18. Bastard service tree.. not a hybrid.
  19. I had a him micro I forget which one as I sold it as i found it was virtually useless , would not pick up deer in long grass at 100yards to the point my eyes would see them before the spotter scope did so came to the conclusion it was a waste of time and put it on eBay.
  20. Marlinspike sheet bend Bowline half hitch timber hitch Truckers hitch VT fisherman’s alpine butterfly I don’t use anything else really although at some point I’d like to learn a reliable ways to tie alternative to a timber hitch in rigging for the block installation but if it ain’t broke it’s hard to motivate to try! Any recommendations?
  21. It should just slide out if you open the end cap…. Definitely not glued as they are replaceable.
  22. I have one in the truck mark well two , contrary to the guys above I find it a very handy tool to have, my eyes are not what they where and 30 + years ago when I learnt to sharpen a saw ..and I’ll be honest I’ve found in the last 5 I’ve struggled sharpening heavily damaged chains and to keep an eye on my dominant hand in check, I’ve found this a pretty handy tool to use if I hit a rock and the chain is knacked… I will still free hand file most chains but the 1/4 pitch little echo is a nightmare and just looks a blur to me and the bigger bars are nice to have a go over every 2-3 sharpens to keep them cutting straight and it saves time rather than having to do the rakers separately.
  23. They are a bit aggressive! I don’t think they are bad though, just keep the flat file off and put it back on when needed as suggested in the video, but I find they work fine when the flat files and you have replaced the rounds. .
  24. I’d give it another year yet! I’ve found they really don’t like being moved even as 8-10ft trees to the point where they will still die a year later, I dug up 6 a few years back and out of them 1 survived and they where all dormant when moved.
  25. Root stock would be fine, probably not a bad choice at all , personally now I would not touch them for 4-5 years so they find there feet and develop fruiting spurs.. then work from there.
