  2. I don't think you can beat a stick at arms length myself and a tape measure, I rarely use my Clinometer
  3. Oh yeah! sport with you - Botex
  4. Good point never thought of that
  5. I hear I hear they're right hot on it in Europe lol, especially Italy, Greece, Spain and the like.............
  6. Cedars don't grow very well here imo, I've seen cracks like this before quite often it looks like included bark, what causes this imo a combination of poor growing conditions, and as you say rotational loading, I guess the split carried on up the trunk? isn't this called shake, the tree in your picture looks a bit top heavy imo too
  7. In Scandinavia lots of people use cars, instead of 4x4's all they do is change the tyres, I think its a good idea Mark if you need to get out in this weather, personally I'd rather sit at home. The trouble with Transits IMO, I think the back axel/diff is too highly geared, my Isuzu Grafter twin rear wheel would go places a transit wouldn't, I do feel for the Cabstar boys in this weatherr though.........
  8. I had one, but much preferred the Rayco with its bigger wheels, the smaller diameter but wider Danequip wheels make grinding hard work imo, but you can access narrower gates etc with the Danequip [with change of wheels], so bit of a catch 22, all manual grinders need a ply board under the wheels tbh to stop you from rutting, makes for easier grinding too
  9. If any employer can afford to pay snow days in this economic climate, then they're a far better business person than me..........
  10. I said to the wife I recognise him
  11. I have Kumo kl71's on my truck, great in the snow and mud , but noisy as hell on the road at all other times
  12. Blackthorn nice, great for wildlife............
  13. I only put into practice what others far more experienced, experts in the field tell me. A reduced tree will use the same amount of water the next season,so this rules out supposedly all phased reductions and has for 10 years I know of. I think Mattheck did the research into this. As for heave from soil expansion, this is a very very rare occurrence. The fact the tree was planted in the wrong place generally, and a problem with future subsidence is highly probable, would stand you in good stead if found in front of a judge, all I know is, most if not all consultants deal with the impending threat ie the tree rather than concerns about heave, to tell the truth I have wondered what might happen legally speaking if heave did occur, I think industry practice would save your ass TBH
  14. The genus is big, granted, but the majority planted over here are eucalyptus gunnii
  15. No longer relevant in law, as even with a phased reduction the tree will extract the same amount of water as before the reduction, plus all living things die, you couldn't protect from heave, say if honey fungus struck and killed the tree, or it was hit by lightning. When talking shrubs, I mean large laurels etc, even ivy and other climbers have caused subsidence, there was a case study where a row of trees were saved as it was proved beyond reasonable doubt, that it was shrubbery that caused the subsidence and not nearby trees
  16. You don't need a use a plasticity test for when you're sure you are dealing with London clay, records of seasonal fluctuation/dessication are good if times on your side, as for methods of construction only really relevant on houses built mid 80's onwards, treat all older buildings with extreme caution, well that's what I do
  17. Small shrubs have been known to cause subsidence in clay soils, let alone Eucalyptus, I've carried out loads of subsidence work, the NHBC planting guide is a good tool to work with if in doubt, trees and clay soils are a recipe for subsidence.
  18. Casserole in red wine, thyme, shallots and garlic, or roasted slowly rubbed with 5 spice powder.............
  19. Cut and Clear it
  20. I'm no Bear Mears lol, but I can grow veg, longline fish, set nets and crab pots, set snares, shoot reasonably well, cook, and gather a bit of bush tucker, as a kid I watched my old Dad and Grandfather kill and butcher a pig, the memory stuck, and I could easy do it myself. My only down fall is DIY I could knock up a good meal, but my dwelling might not be up to much lol
