  1. I can only echo the others here, £850 for 2 men for 3 days is way too cheap, regardless of the fact you lost the job. If the other company is very efficient, highly skilled and organised, and saw to do the job in one day, then maybe thst would explain his lower price. Either that or he didnt realise the enormity and complexity of the job and completely messed up his pricing. Hard to tell from afar, I shouldnt worry about it now, its gone.
  2. No fuss Cerne, and nothing personal, i just gave my opinion on the topic, as you asked. Carry on, and enjoy yourselves.
  3. I gave my opinion, as invited. Yes its off topic.
  4. I know the sun has been a little warm for a couple of days, but it seems to really get to some people
  5. Ok, to be fair the OP has asked for our thoughts on this topic, my thoughts are that it has no place on this forum. BUT its not my forum, if it was it would be deleted by now. Instead I'll let the malcontents to have their little whinge, after all its a free society we live in.
  6. Hope this event continues to grow year on year, it ticks the boxes that others missed out on for several years. Be good to catch up with members old and new alike, come and have a go on the axe throw with Arbtalk, and help raise funds at the same time for the Childrens Trust.
  7. Top of the world mate, just need to be about another year fitter now ta
  8. Is that what its called these days?
  9. Sooooooo....did we find out if your bum did indeed look big or not
  10. Isnt Steve doing some sort of web thingy now? May be worth a look Lee
  11. In the old days, you got what you were worth, no such thing as minimum wages then!! If you were crap at your job, you were got rid of, if you were good at your job, you earned a wage, then a better wage then an even better wage as you progressed through life. Dead wood was removed from the company, good workers encouraged. Unless there was a union, then it alll went downhill fast. By having a minimum wage, everyone keeps a job, albeit on low pay, whether they are good or not. Its harder now to dismiss the idle worker for fear of tribunals and their human rights. But £7.50 is in excess of the minimum wage, its not bad money, if youre a family man the State will pick up the difference in benefits, if you a lad at home its plenty to live on and pay some keep to your mum.
  12. Ty, that quote is so applicable to just about every company I have ever worked for, not only tree work. But it is also so true, whether we like it or agree with it or not. The government wants us to work into old age, but no one wants to keep old people at work, they (wrongly) dont require the older generation with a lifetime of experience and skills in the workplace, there is no long term plan in place for businesses. So as you near old age, you at least can be employed as a store greeter at Asda, hmmmm fulfilling for a person with a lifetime of skills and experiences.....not!
  13. Dunno who invented singing and whatnot, but he must have been black, with a sense of rhythm and naturally melodious he was defintely NOT European!!
  14. Poor pay...hmmm not really is it! One of my sons is a mechanic, coming up for 21, he spent 2yrs at college to qualify, he has now completed 2yrs at a training institute in advanced mechanics and diagnostics. He has to supply all tools to do his everyday work, cost of around £1000 to start with, adding as and when more kit. Currently on minimum wage, until all training is complete, which will be a total of 5 yrs intensive training, he will then get just over £8.50 per hr plus entitlements. 5yrs training....arb you can do all your training in as many weeks. But he loves the training, and loves the work,as said minimum wage is not bad to start out for a youngster. This is the real world, not some fantasy world created by some union where they want something for nothing. This is a vocation, not some dead end job washing out wheelie bins or shelf stacking, a vocation that requires many skills and abilities that you learn on the job, not in a college. However, its a vocation 1000s are queueing up to get into, and will work for free if necessary. At its base level, this job is not highly skilled, does not require intelligence, and therefore does not command top dollar
  15. Good point. I think only EN471class 3 requires sleeves, for dual carriageways where speeds are 50mph and above, but i may be mistaken, sub 50 mph single lane routes only require EN471/1 or 2, ie waistcoats or t shirts. Again I could be wrong as I have yet to refresh on highways tickets.
  16. But do Stretch air make a hi viz that meets highways requirements? Personally havent seen one yet.
  17. Winched???? whimp!! Thought youd have just ripped them tiddlers out with your bare hands
  18. Glad your first session went well. The steroids will bounce your emotions everywhere. At first I didnt find them too bad, but as the weeks went by they messed my head big time. Id be on the ceiling for a few hours, then a snivelling wreck for no reason. Some get the roid rage, others dont. I found eventually sleep was really hard to get, an hour at the most, and that was filled with terrors as soon as I shut my eyes. As soon as that 2week treatment stopped, so did the mood swings and terrors. i dont know how my treatment compares to chemo for your illness, but I know i was on a high dosage to try and rectify my problems. all the best, Andy.
  19. I think a pic would definitely help in this case, purely in the interest of giving the most accurate feedback possible. Would hate to mislead anyone on this forum.
  20. Hre we go again with another of these threads that just churn out a load of tripe, produced for the disaffected to give them a cause. To what end, and why? What are you going to do to change your environment, your "farm"? Absolutely nothing! Just sit there and moan about your lot. This country may not be perfect, may not be ideal, but if you dont like it, why are you still here? Because there is nowhere better! But at least you have the freedom to have a little whinge about it.
  21. Not yellow ones!! Magnets for those annoying little black beetles and numerous other flyey, stingey, bitey little blighters that become the bane of our lives. I have the breathable Airtex type hi viz polos, find them relatively cool(ish), but i dont think anything is 100% perfect.
  22. My Blackberry was just fine, but its not an iPhone:biggrin:
  23. A tip for all of you who are worried about how tough it is, try having the rug pulled from under you healthwise, the ability to earn is taken from you just like that! Then try to get yourself going again, but again limited by the pathetic amount your body will let you do before you are too tired to do more. Now run along and be grateful for the one thing that you do have, regardless of wealth, and that is your health and your ability to earn something
