  1. I cant really see any advantages over standard bars, and a big disadvantage (huge kickback area) http://www.arboristsite.com/stickies/109002.htm is quite a good read on the topic
  2. Did I mention that my Gransfors arrived yesterday
  3. It was a cat...
  4. You use the camera on the ipad??? Ive seen such people around here do that, but didnt realise it was a global phenomenon! I think Im just too self conscipus to start waving an ipad at things like that in public. Simple answer, i havent tried yet.
  5. Jeez are we going soft or something? I can think of several climbers whove jumped into the deep end, including crane jobs on their 2nd week after passing their tickets. Those men have gone on to be some of the best in this area. If you dont feel capable, then you should step down to 2nd climber or whatever. At what time do you think you would be advanced enough to be the lead climber? 6months, 1 year....longer? Or maybe youll never be ready. You are responsible for your self, and your future.
  6. How much does your fuel cost where you live? Bread? Rent/mortgage? Is it a third of the prices elsewhere in the country? I doubt it. Most climbers in this area I know (top of their game mind you) are earning in excess of £150 a day. And why shouldnt they? A good team will always make more money than half a good team (ie one good climber, 2 lazy groundies) as you can only work at the pace of the slowest/weakest link. Cheap labour is like fitting cheap parts to a machine, it will break down.
  7. No way, a wishing machine is for making wishes
  8. I think the issue here is more the fact that the chap he used to work for now basically pays only beer money for labour, rather than pay a decent day rate for a semi skilled dedicated "professional" arb. Id be assessing you (jnoon) for what you bring to the table, your attitude and your skills. Thats hard to do over the net, but if you can make me money then you should earn sensible renumeration for your efforts. As a start, Id expect you to be charging me £120 a day, your tools and fuels etc inclusive, if youre good and reliable, safe and make me money, that would increase in time, if youre not....well theres a lot of good arbs out there waiting to find work
  9. Id just like to thank the sponsors I pestered for the prizes. We do appreciate in these tight times the generosity shown to us, on behalf of the Childrens Trust. id also like to thank all the participants, without whom the event just wouldnt exist, and the friendly competition between people is always a plus.
  10. Tbh shows are what you make of them. Ive been around the AA Show in about an hour and gone home again in the past, (Before Arbtalk) now its a full 2 day event for me. Same at other shows. Now I put something into it, enjoy the shows and spend less money, just through participating, meeting people for a laugh and a few beers
  11. Spend you pennies on axe throwing then you dont need a certt for that, although some of us should have been certified years ago
  12. I get your point to a certain extent. The shows do need that little "something else" to Keep them appealng. This is why Steve and I came up with the Axe throwing... Give something else to do and raise funds for charity. Take a look at the spec for Joneses show, free camping, music and the 3peaks tree climbing for Help the Heroes, plus of course axe throwing comps and more. All we need is people to turn up and participate, and if anyone has an idea of what else they want, then approach show organisers and put it forward...you never know!
  13. As we've said before on other threads, those days are gone. You may get one or two bargains here and there though. We cant have it all ways, more gear is sold all year round via the web than is sold at trade shows, so net prices are going to be cheaper. It costs the trade a lot of money to pitch up at a show, to staff it, to pay for the nights out and down time setting up the stand, so you see its not always viable to slash prices further. The people who gain are the show goers, you can try before you buy, you can ask questions about products, you can meet other arbs and chill out over a beer, and you even get to throw axes about:thumbup: with the economy as it is, i think we're lucky to have any shows at all.
  14. Last year IIRC there was two shows up North, Arb Fair North and Clarks show at Dumfries, i believe Arb Fair North will be every two years, dont know what Clarks are planning. TBH everyone moans whereever the shows are held, but realistically turnouts are pretty poor. if people dont attend them there will fewer shows. All shows start somewhere, from an idea for need in an area, from a dealer who wishes to promote his business. if you want a show in your area, esp right up in the Scottish regions, get a group together, with a dealer maybe, and run your own show. push it on a forum such as lets say Arbtalk, encourage others in your area to participate and ta daaa you have a show!!
  15. Top stuff, good job, well done each and every person involved. With all the bad news in the press on a daily basis, this should make a good news story. I can only re-iterate the sentiments of everyone else. :congrats:
  16. We all know the correct answer, and so do they. Report it to the relevant management for future attention, making it clear that they have the duty of care for their staff on site, and you have a duty to reinforce this out on site under H&S Act. how would they get on if the H&S officer came along?
  17. There is nothing illegal or dodgy in accepting cash, after all it is the only legal tender (other than postage stamps), in this country. Cheques BACS and so on are not legal tender. so long as paperwork is in order, and tax etc is paid on the monies earned, there is no issue.
  18. I got my copy through Amazon as a used copy for £18
  19. Im guessing the the OP is a happy client who is hoping to help promote them.
  20. As with everything Read the very small print a friend of mine had to have brain surgery done on his dog, the insurance didnt cover that and cost him around £3k, the reason, his dog was just over 7 and the insurance only covered it til 7 years of age.
  21. Well, I just gone and bought me an axe, a nice Gransfors, so now I gotta come to the show whatever. sorry all those traders who forgot to take any to the AA, the money was in my pocket all ready and waiting to give you. hopefully someone will have the foresight to bring a couple along to sell at the show. PS hope the gut muscles are mended enough to throw the damn thing now!
  22. Be a damn sight easier than tree work at the minute
  23. Even better than that Felix, its actually 2 whole days of fun-packed frivolities and an arboricultural bonanza all rolled into one big package, and all for free too. Tbh what more can people ask for? In these tough times, its good value for no money
  24. Haha you and me both, I am now very well rested
