  1. A picture of the tree and it’s surroundings would speak a thousand words
  2. Been faffing around with chat gpt a little bit and run a query on wood chip uses. It threw up a suggestion that it was useful for erosion control which I found a bit baffling. Its thrown up quite a lot of incorrect information on other queries so I thought I would look into it, and it turns out its a thing. Just a moment... WWW.RESEARCHGATE.NET Wood chips were studied for their efficacy in controlling soil erosion on a steep construction site with disturbed soils. The purpose of the research was twofold: to determine if wood chips could be used to reduce the off-site movement of soil during construction activities, and to find an environmentally sound alternative to the landfill disposal of wood wastes generated in the urban forest. The research was conducted on field plots that received natural precipitation. Twelve erodible plots were established on an embankment with a 55% slope and an elevation change of nearly 12 m. Each plot had a width of 3 m and a horizontal slope length of 10 m. A series of flow dividers was installed at the toe of each plot to measure runoff and sediment. Four treatments were studied: large wood chips, small wood chips, a mixture of wood chip sizes, and a control with no chips. The mixture of wood chip sizes represented the size distribution that was found to occur from chippers. The wood chips were applied at a rate that covered 80% of the soil surface. The erosion rate for the small wood chip treatment was not significantly different from the zero-cover plots. The erosion rates from the large wood chip and mixture of chip sizes were not significantly different from one another, but were significantly different from the zero-cover treatment. Overall, in comparison to the zero-cover treatment, the small wood chip treatment reduced erosion by 22%, the large wood chips reduced erosion by 78%, and the mixture of chip sizes reduced erosion by 86%. The results of this project indicate that wood chips (as produced by a chipper) should be utilized as a soil cover and need not be discarded as solid waste.

  6. STIHL has launched upgraded versions of its popular AP System MSA 160 C-B, MSA 200 C-B, and MSA 220 C-B cordless chainsaws, offering professional users a new streamlined design, improved battery performance, faster cutting and enhanced operational features. The new MSA 160 C-B is more powerful than the previous version, boasting a larger motor and compatibility with the recommended AP 300 S AP System battery, which ensures an increased electrical output of 1.5 kW for faster cutting performance. Moreover, the enhanced MSA 220 now comes as standard with a 3/8P pitch, 1.1mm gauge PS3 PRO chain, which improves cutting performance by up to 20% due to its narrower kerf. The new chain has been specifically designed for use with STIHL’s new Light 04 1.1mm guide bar, allowing more cuts to be made per battery charge. The MSA 160 C-B and MSA 200 C-B feature a 1/4P chain for smooth and precise cuts. All three new models have seen numerous upgraded operational features introduced to improve the user experience. These include improved visibility of the chain oil level for faster checks, a thumb lever and OPC starting switch for increased comfort and safety, as well as a soft rubberised grip and optimally balanced handle position for maximum control and comfort. In addition, all new models feature quick chain tensioning for fast and tool-less replacement or tensioning of the chain, as well as bayonet style oil tank caps which can be opened quickly and easily while wearing gloves. All the new saws are compatible with the STIHL Smart Connectors, part of the STIHL Connected fleet management system. Smart Connectors record and transmit the working time of the tool to the user’s smartphone, giving prompts to complete important maintenance tasks exactly when they’re required. 7. Too easy, cortina
  8. Been with bt for years. Cost about £65 a month for fast fibre there’s probably cheaper options out there but it’s reliable and runs without a hitch. I have 3 of their extenders chained from the kitchen to the garage and then my office to give good enough speed to the bottom of the garden. plus with a bt account I can access bt wifi almost anywhere. good reminder though as I’m out of contract so might call to haggle with them on the price
  9. You’ll find those 3 little birches will become all the more appealing the older you get 😀

  12. That’s a lovely tree
  13. I am, but in hindsight I may have picked a different wood. Not sure how well this will stand up over time, it does dent quite easily. it’s my partners little business we opened up in lockdown. An opportunity came up in a shopping village down the road so we thought it was worth a punt. Gets all the crap out of the house which is a big bonus I think the clocks are going to sell well. I asked the guy if he does custom ones. 14. Just made this for our new baby shop that’s opening this weekend. No finesse in the carpentry unlike a professional carpenter such as Leechcroft Carpentry, just a massive amount of wood with about 20kg of screws holding it all together. Looks passable on the outside though, weighs an absolute ton and will probably survive a nuclear war. Timber is western red cedar. Used a couple of very useful tips I picked up from here last time, including screwing a piece of wood to a waney edge plank to cut a straight edge, and drilling a pilot hole larger than the screw to help cinch 2 pieces of wood together nice and tight. I forget the users who suggested this but thanks, it made all the difference.
  15. So you told them the first image wasn’t good enough and this was the best they could come back with? 😂
  16. Newark Golf Club are one of a growing list of UK courses discovering the many benefits that Aspen Fuel brings to the operation of their petrol-powered equipment. It’s been three years since Course Manager Alex Clarricoates made the switch to Aspen 2 and Aspen 4 for a selection of their machinery and hand tools – including seasonal equipment which now starts first time, every time, even after significant periods in storage. “We were familiar with Aspen and decided to give it a try during COVID, when we started to encounter difficulties in accessing pump fuel” explains Alex, who has been at the 18-hole parkland course for 15 years. “It’s not until you incorporate it into the day to day operations that you really begin to appreciate the improvements that an ethanol-free alkylate fuel can have for both the operators and the equipment. The biggest benefit for me is the shelf-life of Aspen, which has seen us get equipment out of the shed which has been dormant for a year and starts again with no trouble at all.” Together with damaging plastic and rubber components, ethanol binds moisture which then acidifies, causing the issues commonly experienced with ‘gummy deposits’, reliability issues and reduced storage life. Being free from ethanol as well as benzene, sulphur and many other harmful substances, Aspen Alkylate petrol offers a clean alternative for both 2 and 4-stroke engines – available in a range of pack sizes and bulk ordering available, which includes safe and convenient delivery to site. “We use roughly 400 litres of the 4-stroke Aspen, and 200 litres of the 2-stroke each year, both delivered in 200 litre barrels and stored exactly where we need it. Another benefit we’ve found is the Aspen 2 being pre-mixed which has eliminated issues we’ve experienced in the past where incorrect fuel to oil ratios have resulted in faults with some of our 2-stroke engines.” Along with reduction in service time and the associated costs, Alex notes that improvements have also been observed to the operator working environment. “The cleaner burn results in a big reduction in noxious fumes so, when you’re working with a chainsaw in dense woodland for example, you’ll notice that come the end of the day you don’t have headaches.” These qualities have also been well received by the club. “Like a lot of venues we’re looking at sustainability and ways of reducing the impact we make on our surroundings. Aspen Alkylate powering our petrol equipment is a great step forward in us being more environmentally friendly.”
  17. What’s more concerning is that you sang it anyway!
  18. You asked for feedback and clearly asked if we think the market is big enough. I’ve been working in the digital arborist space for over 15 years now, have launched several web apps during that time as well as a couple of iOS/android apps. I think I have a reasonable feel for the market. If they are looking for a labour of love then go for it. If they are looking for a stand along business opportunity they’ll probably starve to death.
  19. No, there’s not a big enough market.
  20. Their sycamore is maple
  21. Oh we try to, believe me.
  22. Looking at the fencing and house in the background i'd say he's American, in which case Sycamore is what they call their Plane trees there.
  23. Seems to be working fine for me
  24. With a rich history of supplying world-class woodchippers, 2023 sees the team at GreenMech proudly celebrating 30 years in business. Over the course of the last three decades, innovation in manufacturing and a focus on service and support has cemented the GreenMech portfolio at the heart of operations for a wide array of end users from arborists and landscapers to local authorities, golf course managers and more. With their strongest product line-up to date, GreenMech look set to enter the next chapter with solutions that continue to set the industry standard in the UK and beyond. While much may have changed in terms of products and features, GreenMech have called The Mill Industrial Park in Warwickshire their home since the company was founded in 1993 by, now Chairman, Tony Turner. From here, over 14,000 products have been designed and manufactured, with more than half of the total product exported to customers globally – as far as Iberia, Scandinavia, Fiji and New Zealand to mention just a few. Success around central Europe has also seen the establishment of GreenMech France and GreenMech Germany, to facilitate tailored sales and support in these markets. The current range spans more than 15 units, with chipping capacities from 100mm up to 220mm. Alongside innovations such as GreenMech’s revolutionary disc-blade chipping system, turntable technology and their SAFE-Trak and SURE-Trak systems for unparalleled embankment safety, one of the biggest introductions in recent years was the launch of the EVO Series in 2019. Produced in direct response to industry demands for more aggressive torque, more powerful bite and more throughput, the EVO range encapsulates both road tow and tracked variants at 6” and 8” capacities. Jonathan Turner, son of Tony and current GreenMech Managing Director said, “We are incredibly proud of our achievements but are even more positive and excited about our future. We look forward to supporting our existing customers while continuing to develop industry-leading new products, designed to perform without compromise.” The team will be commemorating the occasion with colleagues, customers and friends at events across the calendar, starting with their attendance at The Arb Show, at Westonbirt in May. GreenMech at 30 also forms part of wider celebrations for Turner R&D Ltd, for whom 2023 marks 60 years of trading.
