I want one but cant decide if it's the type of thing that loses its novelty value quickly.

It's a lot quicker with a drill press than a lathe unless you have a few jigs made up IME.

how can you make the undercut with a drill press?

 

woodturners will have been most likely to have done this first anyway, well before an engineer with a lathe did it.

 

don't forget that turning is about 5000 years old
