Genuinely interested.

We used a fire lighter snapped in half . Light walk away always come back to a healthy fire.

All fires of stoves need kindling of some sort or other to get them started from cold, newspapers are OK but can put a lot of smoke out especially if there is a lot of kindling over them, so an appliance with a poor pull in a low wind situation could lead to smoking back into the room. Wood/wax products such as CWs Flamers product work well.

I use a firelighter then throw on a few logs (larch mainly) and away she goes, not used kindlers for a good number of years now.

I just screw up paper put a few prices and kindling on top, light it up and shut stove door, as our kindling is oak it gets up to a good heat and lasts a while so you don't need much of it to get the logs going and we use quite big knotty logs that are a bit crapoy to sell

Perfect kindling by the sounds of it. I now only ever light the stove using the top to bottom method. Larger logs at the bottom, smaller next and then light the kindling on top. Try it, very efficient, burns all the gases......
