The safety guarantees didn’t do them any favours in 2014. 
Probably an easier agreement to get out of Steve rather than abandoning a fellow NATO Member.

I personally think the whole nato thing is a massive bluff that’s yet to be put to the test other than against small countries that are considered a walkover

Maybe during the Cold War when west Germany was littered with NATO forces including our own BAOR  it was literally ready to fight at a few hours notice. Nowadays I’m not sure, we in particular just don’t have the armed forces anymore and is the leadership and political will there ?? . 
4 years in and it’s still nothing more than wind and piss about increased defence spending. 
Right now  the USA calls the shots, Europe including the UK only has themselves to blame.
