Steven P is correct in pointing out that since we left the EU we also left the Dublin Regulations whereby someone crossing the Channel 'could' be returned to the first 'safe' country they arrived in.

Is it coincidence the numbers of those attempting to cross the Channel rose sharply in 2020 when we formally left?

You sure

But I bet it's the French general in Sharpe.

Hi Johnsond - Never said the Dublin Agreement was a roaring success, rather that there was a facility to return migrants that no longer exists. It worked both ways in that the UK was also responsible for asylum seekers in other parts of the EU who had family members already in the UK. Numbers of returns were indeed low......but a damn sight higher than currently!

My main point, in trying to be as brief as possible, was that as limited as it was, it was still a way to return people that we no longer have. Numbers of boat crossings have increased since 2020 when we formally left the EU. Add that with the French waving the boats off as there is no longer a shared EU border...and hey presto, it just got even easier to get to the UK! Nothing exists in isolation, rather a series of events combined once we left the EU to make it more worthwhile to try.

P.S. I'm getting the distinct impression we need to change the subject to soup!

we can't stop the boats because of all the politicians who think like SP and sime42

These people dont want to be negative about the incoming sapiens

That's an odd conclusion. I wish even some politicians thought like me to be honest, the country would be a better place indeed. IMO obviously!

I was merely countering a ridiculous claim made the other day: that illegal immigrants, that arrived yesterday, are somehow breaking our NHS. Since I'd just had first hand experience of the situation. They're not. The NHS is clearly fooked, but it's not because of them. Obesity, creeping privatisation, piss poor management, a broken social care system, an aging and increasingly unhealthy population and a whole host of other issues are doing far more damage than illegal immigrants. That's just fake news for the hard of comprehension to lap up.

I'm not against being negative about sapiens of any flavour. Of course there'll be wrong 'uns and idle 'uns among immigrants, (legal and illegal), and if we had a properly functioning immigration system in the UK then we could and should be keeping them out. I'm not buying the idea that there's a higher proportion though, compared to our indigenous population. I'd wager that their average work ethic is better than that of our own cohort of bloated benefit bums. We don't see many British people working their arses off for a pittance doing hard or tedious graft like fruit picking/car washing/caring/parcel delivery work/nail bars/hospital cleaning etc etc. It's far easier just to sit at home on benefits.

Lovely, just lovely. I've not had that in years. I used to put a couple of wedges of lemon in as well. The acidity cuts through and compliments the offalness of the liver and the fatty/saltiness of the bacon a treat.

So just to get things straight over the last few posts it seems like.
There are zero white people working in the NHS.
The NHS would collapse without immigration.
The boats are full of women and children all with genuine asylum claims.
Brexit caused everything that’s gone wrong.
Blair’s  open doors was a figment of people’s imagination.
Anyone who voted leave is responsible for those chancers being escorted off the beaches and over channel.
Rejoining cap in hand would sort everything and allow us to fly through passport control( let’s face  it this is a game changer for how many  😳) .

Where was this claim made 42, breaking the NHS ??
Old habits die hard with you it seems.
I seem to recollect it was more along the lines of what care asylum/ illegals were entitled to upon arrival. I’m pretty sure screenshots of BMA and Gov documents were posted up to back up the facts.

Hi Johnsond - Not sure how you came to all those conclusions, i don't recall anyone making all those assertions, but hey ho! There is so much there to unpick, it would waste too much time for us all. Better to disagree agreeably and move on.

Hi Oldfeller and Stubby - I kind of agreed with your posts. However differently we all view the world, the end result is that one way or the other we are all heading for hell in a handcart. Enjoy your dinners!
