Whilst in a FC beech shelter belt, came  across this rather impressive burr.

Twin stemmed dead birch selected for felling, with big white fungi growing on both stems.

Saturday afternoons I usually drive around pricing work.

I don’t mind it, relaxed meetings with clients, a bit of flim-flam etc.

Chance to look at things as I drive around.

Heres a rather spectacular oak in the middle of the field, the river Vienne in the background.

A habitually wet field I’m guessing so unusual to see a mature oak in these circumstances.

Not remarkable trees as such but I was impressed to see such large grafted trees and how obvious the graft union is.

 

Couple of questions. What trees are they? I suspected lime, but not very confident. Secondly, why are the grafts straight across the stem, rather than along a diagonal line across like fruit tree grafts often are?

 

Spotted them in the middle of Coventry. A surprising end to a surprising visit. I wasn't expecting it to be so nice!

Both halves look lime to me . Could it be something like small leaved lime grafted onto a different lime rootstock ?
