Stubby, You should be mad, considering your fathers age and how well he will heal going forward. Keep his brandy serving friends either away from him or have a conversation with them and anyone else your dad has as friends. Topic: No more adult beverages for my father, Period. And yes it is your place, it your father!

Sorry to hear that Stubby.

Presumably the friend was unaware of the potential effect the brandy would have on your father?

Is he still of sound mind? If so it sounds like he himself is the one that needs a bollocking. Always hard though, the way the dynamics between generations change with the passing of time. Accepting advice (let alone "orders" ) from somebody that you had to teach how to hold a spoon must be an incredibly difficult thing to get your head around.

It's tough.

My old man was a renowned big drinker in the local.

He can't hack it anymore, he's 79, got Parkinson's, a shell of the former man.

My mates can't grasp it though, still wanting him to do six pints in an hour 'like the old Roger Bolam'.

He'll take the young lads apart for a bit, then start talking to his beard.

When it's me telling you to calm down you know that's a bad thing.

To an extent though, these old codgers are old enough to make their own decisions, I still love having a drink with him. They're from a different time.

A classic a few years back was in the local with a Kent mate.

He asked Dad if he wanted another at last orders.

'Oh no, I've had six. I'm not drinking and driving'.

Class,

There will be a time, sadly when your father is no longer around. But memories like that remain forever.

If you wrapped these people up in cotton wool they'd object & quite rightly too, because life is for living not avoiding.

Thanks for sharing your story.

Sorry to here about you Dad Stubby he's only getting his own back on you. I bet you gave him a few headaches when you were growing up . Being serious for a moment, my mother eats too much, drinks too much, until recently smoked too much, puts too much salt in her food etc etc etc. When she was ill last year I tried to reason with her about her health. She calmly explained to me that she's 76 and has lived her life and she's gonna live out her last years enjoying herself. That shut me up she living her life exactly how she wants to
