I think it was  used for fuses, there wouldn't have been enough for general use. Alder is probably good  because it can be ground to a specific grain size and this would affect how the mixture burnt.

 

Moisture is all driven off before pyrolysis starts unless you have very big wet logs.

You would hope so given the extra work and energy required to produce charcoal.
