550 xpg is currently a box of bits!

My 550 XPG has apparently died. It is 3 years old and the main bearing failed last week. Apparently the is some scoring to the barrel. My local dealer is suggesting it would be more than £300 in parts. Add workshop time and VAT and I might as well replace with a new saw. (dealer has been good in the past. My 560 also threw a bearing but was rebuilt under warranty)

 

I am now the proud owner of a box of bits.

 

What options do I have?

 

Is their a sensible repair option other than the dealers?

 

Do i just use/sell the bits as spares.

I would happily buy the muffler off you and possibly the whole crank case. Depending on what you would be looking for money wise.

Why not have a go at rebuilding it yourself? Buy a clone pot and piston and bearings on eBay and cheap whatever else you need (bearing pullers etc) all the Husqvarna workshop manuals are available online, I believe (unlike Stihl) and the manual will show you step by step what and how to go about it. You could post pics of videos of you progress here - make for an interesting thread. I did an engine rebuild on a Husq strimmer recently, never attempted anything like it before, but it went off without a hitch, strimmer runs beautifully. YouTube tutorials were invaluable.....worst could happen is you end up with a few more bits in your box-o-bits!

save the hassle ,buy a new 1,& put the old 1, on here or ebay for spares ,

I have loads of boxes of bits of various saws. It's amazing how you can always find a particular part for one of your current saws, saving you money and downtime.

Buy a new one and keep the old one.

Multiple choices:

 

a) If I had time and not in a hurry I'd rebuild it using good quality spares.

b) If I was in a hurry I'd buy a new saw and sell the broken one for spares or repair on ePay.

c) If I had loadsa spare cash I'd buy two new saws and give the broken one away to a friend.

d) If I was a bit weird I'd carry on using the broken chainsaw and make pretend chainsaw noises, until I lost my voice.

Especially if you buy the 4T Helium and mix in blueline racing oil
