Climbing a conifer

In regards to spiking a live tree....My old tree officer always said that it was an acceptable practice and he couldn't understand why we would spend ages with a throw line, his argument was that the damage done to the stem with spikes was minimal compared to the damage about to be done with a chainsaw.... But i still couldn't do it!

If it really can't be accessed by ladder and pole saw i would personally have no hesitation in spiking up till you hit the first branches .

 

Yes always :thumbup: We did a test on an old Ash tree many years ago . Me and one other spiked up the poor thing on many occasions . We practiced gaffing out and many different stropping techniques . This tree has now healed up completely . It was old and way past its best back in the day . It looks just the same today more than 17 yrs on or there about's :001_smile:
