Almost as treequip said it's all relative, I've work with some climbers who thought themselves truly awesome but can't get near what I can achieve in a day and then I've been with climbers who thought themselves kind OK at what they do and they've handed me my ass on a plate!

A good climber is 1 that gets the job done and go's home at the end of the day hassle free....every single day!

i really like both styles! bombing huge chunks of macrocarpa down cos you have another 30 to do that day and don;t have to tidy is great. thinning a mature hardwood in a nice setting has a different satisfaction!

I agree but if you were to generalise your performance how do you see yourself ? Do you prefer the finess jobs or the cut and chucks?

 

I see myself doing whatever the client wants done. A happy client means you are getting paid and its all about making money

It's not all about money though, is it Andy ? We'd all be investment bankers otherwise.

 

It's too easy in this job to get stuck in one mindset, bomb it out or go slow for the groundies etc. I get satisfaction from choosing the appropriate pace and killing it.

I don't reckon the thread was about the quality of work though, more the ability/methods of climbers.

Reg is kinda regarded by some of us,cant speak for all of the guys on here,as the kind of climber us average guys aspire to be like.Hope thats cleared it up for you

Ok that makes sense.

I'd say that the level that Reg has achieved is equal to anyone that is able to do the job safely, without drama, without massive exertion and in unison with the ground crew.

I'd regard that to be the same as my freelancers (one has just moved to Cumbria) and me as well as many other good tree surgeons I've seen.

 

I should add that I've seen many more 'bomber' than I have seen good Arbs.

 

I also add that I base my opinion of Reg on his videos alone as I've never met him.

My ability is not as good as another guy I work with as I don't do as many trees as he does, but there are things I might approach in a more effective way than he. Never the less, he is like a squirrel in a tree and is 10 years my junior! Most of the time I'll work at a pace that I deem 'safe' as I have too much to lose by being Charlie big potatoes in the canopy! Having said that, if its a conifer with a half decent drop zone it's getting smashed!

I suppose it comes down to what you enjoy doing,personally im just not cut out to be a climber who piroettes around a tree makin it look easy.Im a physical climber,i sweat and love removals -25% reductions? Let the other guy do that
