It is a life cycle issue.Early in the year wasps are valuable pollinators.

:thumbup1:

I think there's a noticeable lack of many bugs and beasties.

The screen washer spout broke on the Landrover before Summer and I haven't fixed or missed it yet...

I would have expected to be an inch thick in bugs on the windscreen after a full Summer, but next to nothing!

Not many butterflies seen either....

most social (antisocial!) insects align with the 4 year boom and bust cycle and build up numbers annually in sync

At this point they are unable to get all their protein from scavenging and turn to sweet things - ice cream, sweets and other goodies (like my cold Stella in the garden!!)

Hornets are different beasts very much like Shires look the part but placid and tolerant of us, I have never failed to be near a nest when holidaying in Normandy and none of the 10 plus party has ever been stung!

Plenty of wasps around here if anyone wants any. I had to move a nest that was in the way of a stone wall we were building a few days ago. My lad split a large log today and there was a large nest of wood wasps in the centre, walked out the gate just after and was harassed by several wasps that had made their home in the stone wall.

Wood wasps I can put up with even though they have chewed out a bucket of saw dust from my firewood, however definitely not impressed with the aggression of the wasps in my gateway.

Got a nest in the roof above my office, one or two of the wee beasties have entered the open window, a quick squirt with hair spray has there wings set like a glider they can then be hoovered up after crash landing, its like a WW1 dog fight here at times.......

Oh the irony!

You'd think every tree outfit worth their salt would be equipped to deal with bees wasps n hornets, as a matter of course!

Weren't you the same blokes razzin me bout my bloated yankee medkits n stuff?

Bee suits should be standard issue to every tree crew!
