Competing against the subsidised

For three years I've competed against a local social enterprise for log sales. They manage a small woodland bought for a £1 off the Health Board. They've received £100,000 from the lottery over the last three years. They've four staff and volunteers.

Their funding has just run out and walking down the high street i got hassled by a guy because my business has taken income from them?!

I was swift in my reply that if you can't run a business with a £100,000 subsidy then maybe it's not a real business.

We have the same thing in our area. A big funded community woodland with loads of volunteers. We are lucky that they only have softwood available so we can easily be different and supply quality hardwood. Competition is healthy, do something different and if you can't compete on price then don't. Not everyone wants cheaper, Offer something better

One of the biggest firewood suppliers in the uk was started off a million pound grant off the goverment. Family's rich as we'll.

Shame they have now hit on hard times

Only 1 million? If it's the same firm we dealt with they were grant getters par excellence so certainly would have had a lot.

I was talking to a guy running a local council tree team last week, they are now expected to go out and find domestic work.. I have heard of this before but first time experienced it in my area.. Hopefully they will price realistically..
