We hear this sort of post all the time. To get decent money in this game you have to graft. I've trialled loads of people for jobs and to be honest I wouldn't have them on work experience never mind pay them.

What alot of people fail to realise is gaffers are not just after just standard workers. They want people that can think out of the box, take responsibility show initiative etc etc. tree work is alot more than just cutting trees.

Depends, if its a first step on the road, you live at home with limited overheads, its a chance to learn the job and make contacts.

With time and experience better rates and other options will follow :thumbup1:

Play for the long game would be my advice :001_smile:

Totally agree. Most of us wouldn't do it for £80 a day but think back to what we did do in the early days to make a living and I'm sure the OP is no different. I remember dicing brash up in a trailer or worst still a dumpy bag squeezed in the boot .....

i've been in the same situation.

in my opinion someones personal circumstances dont come in to it. if you are a lottery winner still living at home shouldnt mean your down to £50 a day because you dont need a decent wage.

you said your travelling up to 2hrs to get to work thats around 80 miles!!. do that twice a day your talking £20 of fuel , take away tax at £12 , fuel and oil for the saw at £8-10, nat ins £1.20 your down to £39ish in your pocket not to mention wear and tear on your gear and van.

if you can live on £39 a day and run a household feed kids etc carry on, otherwise dont bother!

saying that you only mentioned cs30/31 so you could only fell and process trees up to 380mm so in forestry you would be very limited to what trees you can cut, so puts you in a bracket of low demand.

Again we dont know your lifestyle so if your happy carrying on and gaining the experience and knowledge [that overules any ticket in my opinion] then better pay will follow.

Right now I'm travelling an 80 mile return journey to work, just got my 30/31 tickets but it's mainly coppice woods I'm cutting and want to cut so over 380mm is quite rare for me.

I understand the olden days of good money are gone but it's got to be worth doing.

I'm thinking tha at £80 a day is going to be a good basic rate even after deducting travel and wear and tear.

It sounds like your going to do it anyway. Huck as got a point, if your playing the long game then fair play. If you NEED to earn a living from the 'off' it ain't going to work.

Do you live at home with your parents?
