Helo Looking for work on self employed basis be it dragging brash, ground work/climber support or climbing. I've been a groundy/climber support for 8yrs and climbing myself for 2.5yrs. working on private jobs and utilities. Tickets held are CS 30, 31, 32, 34, 38, 39, UA1, 2.1, 2.2, first aid, chipper, mewp ( nptc), Towing, CLass 2 HGV. Idealy can travell and stay with van or tent in north west, midlands, shropshire, anywhere in wales. I do other work for other clients/customers which makes up the other 42% of my self employed hours. My accounntant has checked this out as i was following a thread about this matter on that. I'm well clear of the employed status. Are we highjacking the EL insurance thread a bit??

Is 58% of self employed hours for one company classed as "employed"?

Hi. Im a subby ground worker and climber. I've been working for the same firm mostly for some time on both Utilities and private work. The question of insurance and liablity has been on my mind but I havn't discussed it at all with the boss so to speak. Only once I have caused damage to a customer's property (cracked gutter) from a stray branch on a dismantle on a windy day. I was made to pay for the damage £48 in materials, 2hrs on a saturday morning and a good lecture! Which wasn't a bad thing because it's taught me to be more carefull and never underestimate wind power Cost me more than half of my day's earnings which gives a rough idea of what I get paid (under review) I use all my own saws, climbing kit..........the boss supplies the fuel and the transport to the jobs from the yard. It is a question that i must raise with him to clear all the grey areas.

i've been in the same situation. in my opinion someones personal circumstances dont come in to it. if you are a lottery winner still living at home shouldnt mean your down to £50 a day because you dont need a decent wage. you said your travelling up to 2hrs to get to work thats around 80 miles!!. do that twice a day your talking £20 of fuel , take away tax at £12 , fuel and oil for the saw at £8-10, nat ins £1.20 your down to £39ish in your pocket not to mention wear and tear on your gear and van. if you can live on £39 a day and run a household feed kids etc carry on, otherwise dont bother! saying that you only mentioned cs30/31 so you could only fell and process trees up to 380mm so in forestry you would be very limited to what trees you can cut, so puts you in a bracket of low demand. Again we dont know your lifestyle so if your happy carrying on and gaining the experience and knowledge [that overules any ticket in my opinion] then better pay will follow.
