Looks like the Government are looking in the right areas in the NHS. Agency staff who get four times the pay for doing diddly squat had better look for alternative employment

About time too. It's a joke like to see those same agency staff on a paediatric ic ward wouldn't last two minutes. That's where battles are won and lost fortunately for me my boy was on the right side.

Makes my piss boil

Good news if they actually do something about it, maybe cut back on some middle management too...

Hi Mike yes you need dedicated staff fighting to help the ones that are most dear to you. Doctors, nurses and HCAs that get home and ball their eyes out and back in the next morning because they care. Not staff who are milking the NHS for Four times the rate and clock watch til it's time to pop home much the richer

I don't know the answer to this, but I have a couple of friends / acquaintances that support the notion through personal experience.

I've no desire to bash the NHS, we've had our share of superb service from angels, but there seems to be a total aversion in political circles (understandable) but also general conversation to any comment that infers any criticism of the NHS.

I have a question, maybe someone with more first hand knowledge will be able to answer better than the minor / anecdotal information I have.

If the current "demon" is agency staff servicing NHS gaps through recruitment agencies, how many of those "demon agency staff" are actually full time NHS employees utilising their union ring fenced, public sector luxury "rest days" to earn maybe twice as much doing the same job (when they should be resting) through agency work?

I know several that do, and get paid royally for it. Are we actually going to discover that the so preciously guarded terms and conditions are actually just a pith take? (like the fire service holding down second jobs during generous off watch time.)

I genuinely hope someone "in the know" can say this is not the case.

Hi Kevin some do take bank work as they call it on their days off. And as someone strongly against unions I don't think it's the unions fault this has been created. My wife wants to take all her holidays when I take mine but she can't she has to take regular breaks in between to stop the possibility of tiredness affecting her job. So that problem is on the decrease. The problem as created when they decided that they need only so many staff per ward and temp workers would make up the difference when the need arises. However the need is now on a daily basis so the full time staff should be increased. Agency HCA are working on a daily basis on my wife's ward yet receive 3 times the wage and as they travel long distances to work they receive big travel allowances

Good points, well made. I'm reluctant to agree with someone twice in a day:biggrin: but what can you do?

I definitely don't think the generous off time exists in the NHS . Mrs R has been having her regulation 2 days then 9 days straight . Her shifts patterns are also hilarious getting home at 10 pm with a five am start the next day . So generous off time definitely does not exist for nurses I afraid
