LOL! Do people speak like this often or was it for comedy's sake? It's entertaining to watch, but would make my head hurt after a while.

 

It used to be quite common years ago. I still use the odd bit now and again.

It was common in the Eastend/Cockney area of London

It's pleasing to the ears, confusing to the brain tho.

 

I think part of the reason there isn't as much slang used in the U.S. is that most everyone is incredibly touchy now. Anything remotely funny or off color is seen as racist/derogatory/discriminatory. Instead of calling a Brit a Limey, we would just say the fella is British.

 

I have never heard the word Limey used in every day life.
