LOL! Do people speak like this often or was it for comedy's sake? It's entertaining to watch, but would make my head hurt after a while.

 

It used to be quite common years ago. I still use the odd bit now and again.

That clip was done for the comedic value obviously

The language itself started back in the underworld/criminal class back in the 18th century I believe as a means of confusing the police.

It was common in the Eastend/Cockney area of London

It's pleasing to the ears, confusing to the brain tho. :lol:

 

I think part of the reason there isn't as much slang used in the U.S. is that most everyone is incredibly touchy now. Anything remotely funny or off color is seen as racist/derogatory/discriminatory. Instead of calling a Brit a Limey, we would just say the fella is British.

 

I have never heard the word Limey used in every day life.

Owt - anything (just to confuse you with nowt)

 

Also note that each area has different slang and accents, and at a later point, you will need MUCH more translation :lol:

 

I was allus told if tha does nowt for owt unless its for thissen. I also like going to Ilkla Moor b'aht at.:lol:
