Sure it has been said but; I have worked out what I need per hour to break even in terms of replacing kit and paying for my family to exist I have then added on my profit, obviously including the tax mans kit.

I use that to work out my quote, including kit hire etc which I provide to the customer in written form explaining;

a. What they requested.

b. My proposed method.

c. My proposed end state.

I also include any alternatives which may be cheaper or more expensive and then state why I chose my main quote over these.

I feel that providing that detail leaves no ambiguity and avoids negotiation, the competition who are way cheaper will not provide such detail.

I went out last night and looked at a fair sized willow leaning over a single storey clay tiled roof and glasshouse beside roof, big water filled ditch running beside trunk.

Every last bit will have to be lowered and all cordwood cut into logs,so i said £700.

He nearly fell in the ditch and looked at me as if ide gone completely barmy and said he'd had a quote for £150 cash and that surely ide made a terrible mistake.

He then pulled out a grubby business card with '150 cash' written on the back to show me.

I wished him good luck and on the way home wondered what on earth the tree business has become.

He'll be calling you in two weeks to ask you to clear up the mess, which will cost him £850.

He'll also ask if you can repair the glass house etc!

Priceless.

Quotes ? When quoting how are you quoting along side someone how wants the job because there short of work and want to get there name or work seen in a area or someone how has plenty of work and over pricing not to get it, how do you know?.

I did some work 3 years ago now for a council have found out recently I was £2000 cheaper than the next quote and £ 4000 cheap then the dearest and I made a good profit on that job.

So Quotes how knows.

But you also lost a lot of money, if your 2k cheaper you need too look at your pricing!

If the client offers me the other prices before I give mine it's handy.

Would I drop my price? Yes, if I have to to secure the job.

I always laugh when people on forums go on about how they never drop their prices and you don't want those sort of clients.

If I quote say a grand on a job, and the client says "can you do it for 900?" As long as there's still good money in it the answer is yes.
