Does any one ever say on there quote that if the customer gets a cheaper quote and they have the quote in writing to show you that you will try and beat it?

I've heard of Somthing like this but I can't for the life of me think where and how it was worded.

Quote what you need to make the required money on the job.

As soon as you get into haggling you are saying 'it was worth trying for more'.

As has been said on here numerous times- if they are like that at quote time what will the customer be like when it comes to payment?

Be confident of your quote and stick to it.

It's pretty common in other industries but you would have to word it very carefully for work that is carried out before payment! If an insurance company or supermarket offers the same sort of deal it's not considered bad, but as said it could mean price wars starting and issues further down the line if a customer is that focussed on price, not quality of the work.

If you quote a job at a rate that works for you, the next quote might be unmatchable too - especially with cowboy traders around. You're probably better off just offering the lowest price you can afford to start with!

Do customers ever just give the price of other quotes to see if you can beat them without you having to ask/offer?

If a company offers me this sort of deal (no matter what trade) I never take it, they've had a chance to quote so have, in theory given there best quote first time round. I'd always support the guy that gave the best quote first time, its not as if the other company is going to come back hundreds of pounds cheaper and if they do then they really won't get the work as it just shows they were way over first time round
