The gifts are from the super wealthy Parisians, the difference is they give you a bottle to drink when you get home, the local Normans will invite you in and share their homemade cider or Pommeau, even Calvados if your lucky. If you get given a bottle of one of these, it is a great honor, the Norman farmers are poor, and will even ask for the empty bottle back so that they can reuse it.

Hi,

I rather like Pommeau, we make Pineau from Eau de Vie, white wine and Mirabelles leave in the bon bon for a month then bottle although our neighbour has a chestnut barrel for maturing which makes for a nice flavour.

Just read Marco Pierre Whites article in the Telegraph somewhat damming English wine & dont agree. I've drunk some very acceptable English wine, mainly whites, furthermore if it wasnt comercailly viable it wouldn't happen.

Anyway, tonights vin rouge is Côtes de Bourg & very nice too, in fact Côtes de anything - Rhone, Blaye, Bourg, Castillon, Rousillon, etc is usually good.

Our own two vines have been productive, the mou (juice) makes pineau - a bit like sherry and will soon be picking a friends Merlot which is looking good despite some frost earlier on in the year around bud burst.

Not really got into French wine, mostly drunk Italian and sometimes chillian.  Planning a trip to Bordeaux soon though so might start experimenting more

This is the time to come over here for wine buying. All the supermarkets have wine fairs where they have some really great offers at good prices, plus many have the buy eg  three cases and get another free.
