Poor maintenance will kill any truck.

I'm a Jap fan but Landys aren't all bad.

I just wouldn't be seen dead in one

Seriously, we all know the stereotype. H-reg Defender that cost 8k complete with winch, extra spotlights and a 'Sniff My Diff' sticker, always being fixed, the idiot driving it wears a check shirt and LeCheameus, yet drives a tractor for £8/hour

To be fair they arent bad engines if you look after them. This particular one had been using a bit of water so could have been a factor or may not. :confused1:

When it ends up like this its impossible to tell.

You cant really turn the turbo up unless you have spent the money having a hybred turbo. Turning the fuel pump up will give them a bit more power but also increases the smoke! You can tell which ones have been adjusted just by following them and the smoke trail lol.

They are cheap to fix but the heads are prone to cracking and headgaskets going. Early 300's needed to be updated on the cambelt kit as they couldnt even fit them to run straight in the factory as they rubbed the edge of the pullys. Some suspension components have the strength of a peice of straw, chassis rot, they all leak oil....

But the joy is you can get the parts normally the same day and its cheap. Just dont buy britpart replacements if its engine related... :thumbup1:

HI WISE your right there mate on about cam belt and the head gasket and open up just pump and turbo the mod run some bore out to 2.7/2.8lt loads more be nice to one of them engines thanks jon

My landy 110 tipper is a workhorse . Oil and filters changed on average 3 times a year . Uncomfortable and cold in winter although cool and fresh in summer :001_smile: Earns the dollars for me every day . Maintenance is the key . I also run a crew cab Mitsubishi l200 for my Log deliverys . It also tows the plant trailer with the stumpy on board and is often used to shift timber from the job to the yard . Pros and cons with both although if pushed and I could only have one vehicle I'd keep my Landy

the real answer to the question about landrovers...they market them as being "the best 4X4Xfar", then why is there a multi million pound aftermarket improving them, answer, cos there still using post war technolige, apart from slightly updating the engines, and trying coil suspension, they are still piles of crap !!!, no room in the cab(unless your a midget), rot in front of your eyes, no side impact protection, no wait there is, its your legs, factory fiddled towing capacities to make them attractive in the face of REAL FIGURES from the competition. I have never been able to comprehend why so many sheep love them, and dont start me on transits!!!!!!!.......rant over

I brought an old g wagon with road tyres that could go places my 90 with bf tyres would not , it didn't eat diffs gearboxes and engines either.

If I had the money that would be my choice.

I regret letting it go.

If Japanes 4x4s are so bleedin great why do they need names like Shogun, Warrior, and Hugely endowed he-man to sell them? eh.

They should come with a big moustache on the front and some tight denim around the exhaust pipe. :001_tt2:

Maybe I'm one of your sheep then, I go by what I get from a vehicle, yes the side protection is not great, easy enough to fix, & they are cramped if your a lama, not so easy to fix.

Mine worked hard for ten years, no real problems, & will most likely do it again with the new owner, no rust either to date, but I did clean the chassis regularly, as they have trap points, nothing a good hose off won't stay on top of.

As for the aftermarket thing, it's because there are so many of them still on the road, & there is a substansial setup for the Jap stuff, ever growing.

Like em or loath them, the landy will continue to earn people a living, sheep or not, & landy drivers seem less offensive too!:001_tongue::biggrin:

If you need a truck that will take REAL abuse and KEEP coming back for more without totally dying then steer well clear of jap rubbish. It is great until you really slog it, then it is rubbish gutless bendable weak unreliable trash.

And yet the number of japanese made 4wd trucks working in the roughest environments in the world would outnumber LD 1000 to one. (no offence but how often in the UK would your average LD be more than 50 miles from water, gas or a mechanic)

Its understandable that people from the UK would be so loyal to them and the access to cheap parts (hey just as well, right?), and be willing to look past there many faults and put more time into keeping them working, but the rest of the world has moved on to better made, reliable, practical, economical, lower maintenance, cheaper vehicles.

If the LD were good they would sell greatly worldwide

If the japanese were not good they wouldnt sell world wide

The numbers have it. The world wide market for landrovers was theres to loose from the 60's onwards, and they did, and continue to do so to superior machines made by many other companies. The sad story of the british motor industry continued.
