I like the general idea Dave, but it's hard to come up with something isn't it?

 

I'm trying to think of something that utilises my tipper when tree work is quiet or in the winter when the weather is cack. I don't mind driving, and wouldn't mind the odd week sitting in a warm cab eating Yorkies and reading porn.

Thats when you will get the stress Dave, when you get other people involved, they just dont work like yourself, cant you get the wife doing something from home? not sure what mind but just a thought.

 

You want something nice and simple like doing ironing. I can remember doing work for a mother and daughter that just did ironing all day, they had an iron each and watched telly all day!! Perfect job! You don't have to be skilled and although you don't charge the earth, there will always be a few lazy blighters that can't be bothered to do it themselves!!!

I also know someone who does house cleaning and they are turning work away.

 

Nowadays both wife and husband work and don't have time for ironing, washing or house cleaning

what about something like pressure washing drives and patios? transit with an ibc of water and a petrol or diesel pressure washer and a numpty to operate.

there's a company round here who have a presure washer and water tank built into a van, they go round cleaning peoples wheelie bins. I imagine they can do a lot in a day and just follow on after the binmen when all the bins are out on the street.

its all about competant staff, the minute you add machinery and vehicles its a pain, breakdowns, wrong fuel, couldnt get parked. you know the ones. i would stick to what you know huck, its either one man band with a groundie/labourer and good kit. or loads of guys, crap kit and work them like dogs and treat them like crap. and each will hopefully make you 2 quid an hour. but you have to chase contracts to keep them in work, then you get crap cash flow and health and safety night mares. and they usually disapear early on a friday and there is always a story why they are late monday morning.

i like to think that the sort of person that would come and read a tree forum in their spare time generally cares a little more about the job than the average worker........that or they are just really sad like me:ohmy:

How about a job as a rigger in the offshore oil industry.

 

Here in Norway, offshore roatations are:

 

2 weeks offshore

3 weeks leave

2 weeks offshore

4 weeks leave....

 

Plenty of time in betwen for arb work or even interior decorating....

I think running an arb firm must be one of the most straightforward to run.

I'd stick to what you know Dave. Like has been mentioned earlier I would try giving a bit of responsibility (respect) to your employees, they might suprise you. A transit and chipper with a couple of lads doing hedges, smaller jobs while you and another carry out the more technical stuff will be far easier to manage and make money from than trying an entirely alien project.
