MEWP Usage

We hire in a Mantis TSJ38 roughly two/three times a year,

and have a Denka DL28 which just about deals with most of our access issues.

How often are you guys using MEWPs?

Are you able to talk your clients and more interestingly your Bosses,

in to the benefits of using versus the cost (hire/maintenance) implications?

I thought this was a pretty interesting thread.

Be honest guys, someone must have some sort of view on the issue?

i bought a 17 metre nifty last year.excellent bit of equipment.prior to owning it,95%of jobs were climbed,allright in the dry season when the temps around 28-34c but not in the wet when its 38-46c,occaisonally i'd hire in a truck mount 16 metre lift at great cost,climbing in 40+ degrees is no fun at all and usually i would be stuffed after about 6 hours work.however with nifty lift access to 95% of jobs is possible and much less physically demanding,except for the chipper feeders!

I hired in a mewp the other week to reduce a large conifer hedge, It was a compleat wast of money I wish I had climbed it but i guess you have to learn from your mistakes.

I think they still have a use in tree surgery though.

I like mewps for take downs, but thats it, I can't see how anyone can carry out a reduction from one.

Only time I've used it soley to reduce a tree was Tolkiens tree in Oxford which is a hollow Sycamore thats no longer safe to climb, to reduce the foliage clusters with secatuers, which happens every 2-4 years.

 

Other than that we have used one to reduce the sides whilst someone else climbs the top and sorts out the center of the tree, again pretty rare, and not really any quicker or easier.

used one a while ago for take down it had agri. tyres.Good useful equipment .wish i could afford one , but then i would need a 12 wheeler as well!

I use one wherever it can be justified financially, There is a farm mechanic place nearby that has a couple of these available at under 100 quid a day. great machine, sometimes access can be difficult but it will go most places behind the landy.
