The cost of half an hour.

We currently work 8.30 - 4.30 it's always been OK as we've been a small team and efficient at getting out of the yard quickly. We mostly work local and as most people don't like saws before 9 am it's worked well.

 

As we've expanded I found that more guys tends to mean more faff and leaving the yard is taking longer. I am contemplating bringing in an 8 o'clock start. )

 

I am working out how much extra it is going to cost me in wages. It works out about £1000 a year per man.... I have 4 guys.

 

It just reinforces my views about stopping for breakfast/to buy lunch having a tea before work... etc.. ect.

Have 1 guy start at 7.30 am, and finish at 5.30 pm. He can get everything ready and the do the maintenance and refuelling at the end of the night.

That way the team don't need to leave the job at 3.30pm to get back to the yard to dump everything at their backside, not tidy out the van and leave the yard in their trainers at 4.25pm:sneaky2:

We're the same, every now and again, but if it becomes habit it eats into your day..

We start at 7:45 but I get to the yard at 7:30 to open up and make a start loading. No body asks me to I just do, likewise I happily stay on on make sure everything's put away safe and ready to go next day. I don't get paid for the extra 15mins here and there but who gives a monkeys about an extra few quid. It all works out in the end.

7-45/8am at the yard here that gets us to most sites by 8.30 by the time youve set up and up the tree its 9am so all good with noise by then most days back at the yard by 2/3pm for fiddly little maintenence jobs, cleaning trucks etc

wen i had 4 f/t it used to take them 10mins to get ready for work wen they got to the yard i soon stopped that malarky,i told them if you dont come ready & dressed for work @ the stated time get here 10 mins earlier, so your ready @ the stated start time ,job sorted all came siuted & booted & ready

We start when we are all ready, and go home when the job is finished.

If I price a job for a days money theres no problem. Sometimes the day is long, sometimes it's short.

 

If the job is a weeny one I just schedule in something else to get it as close as I can to a full day.

 

My guys are all mature enough to understand that and I never have any problems.

 

I just make sure they know in advance whats going on and never understate what is expected - that way theres no nasty surprises.

My guys are entitled to half an hour, you can't normally get to a shop and eat your lunch in half an hour. A team of 3 wasting 20 mins a day costs the employer over £2000 in wages in a year.

 

If it were your 2 grand Tony you might think differently..
