youlot need to lighten up, aslong as they get the job done and when theres work to be done they are doing it alls good.

 

everyones entitled to a lunch break too, what they do in it aint really down to the boss, if they want to walk off to a chippy, fine.

 

may be thats why some bussiness fail ,???

We start at 7:45 but I get to the yard at 7:30 to open up and make a start loading. No body asks me to I just do, likewise I happily stay on on make sure everything's put away safe and ready to go next day. I don't get paid for the extra 15mins here and there but who gives a monkeys about an extra few quid. It all works out in the end.

I was doing 7am till 5pm at one place i used to work at.

he then took half an hour off each end of the day so 7.30 till 4.30.

 

I never got paid for the regular half hour and 15mins i had to work over (used to knark me off as it worked out an hour or two over the week most weeks).

We start when we are all ready, and go home when the job is finished.

If I price a job for a days money theres no problem. Sometimes the day is long, sometimes it's short.

 

If the job is a weeny one I just schedule in something else to get it as close as I can to a full day.

 

My guys are all mature enough to understand that and I never have any problems.

 

I just make sure they know in advance whats going on and never understate what is expected - that way theres no nasty surprises.

 

That's how we roll.

Should be more like you, I had a lad once who demanded to be paid for every second he was doing anything for work, I said ok we will knock your fag time off and your mobile phone time and see where we get. He didn't last long.:)

Various companies I worked at, 7.30-3.30pm were the fixed hours, overtime after that. 7.00 - 4.30pm then overtime. 7.30 - 5pm then over time. The place I worked where we started at 7am, no extra productivity occurred, esp in the winter. Many (domestic) clients don't you there before they're up and ready, and elderly folk really get annoyed.

Nowadays, generally only myself and one other, I start after the school run, nice big mug of tea and a chat before we start, roll up to the job and work through to Finish, rarely stop for lunch, leave off around 2.30pm. Circumstances have forced my hand, but financially I earn as much as a couple of years ago for less hours, I have "recovery time" to re-energise, it suits me more.

Builders manage to get huge constructions done, they traditionally have long breaks, stop for a chat and a fag, have another break, have breakfast on the way to site Etc etc, oh and earn decent £££s, and employ far more staff, and they rarely break into a sweat.

Must admit I am suprised by the short days talked about here. Domestic tree works starts at 8 and fiinishes when it finishes so perhaps it's just contracting I'm meaning; never do less than 7 til 7; in the summer it's 6 til 9; both plus evening paperwork. I used to be a late starter, struggle to get going in the morning and all that and surprise surprise never made any money; glad those days are long gone.

 

The lunch time is time, as above where said subby or staff can do what the heck they like; I don't think it's big to control people and say you can't go get chips etc. Mobile 'phoners wind me up proper tho - I could have deducted nearly an hour from someones pay for taking up my time like that recently, talking to there own customers arranging stuff - simply not on.

My guys are on salary. we start at 7:30am sometimes we don't finish till 5:30 - 6:00 but other days I send them home at 2. they are there when i need them at no extra cost to me and i return the favour by sending them home early when they break their backs to get done by lunchtime.

It works so far but I dont know if this way would work if I had more than 2 full time guys.

Maybe build flexibility rather than increasing wages? Our guys also get a salary. Paid a 9 hour day from 730 to 1630, breaks are paid as its hard to stop at set times each day. In reality finish time is up to them, they can finish between 4 and 5 whenever the jobs done and paperwork upto date. Over time paid from 4.30 only if leaving yard after 5, free to go home from 4 if everything is done. If they have had late finish in a month then they can trade overtime against going home early some days.
