My favourite firewood is dry firewood, because it burns best!

In seriousness, I've been splitting poplar of late and I've fallen in love. It's the easiest splitting timber I've ever had, and flies through the screw splitter. It might not be the best firewood as an end product, but there is a huge amount to be said for it being incredibly cheap, very easy to process and rapid drying.

Aspen for a quick base, easy to split and rapid drying time. Then dump a large whole Hornbeam log on top. Set the vents on the log burner to half & half and forget about it for the next four hours....Not touched the oil central heating yet. With all the talk of energy price hikes, there's nothing better than free heating:sneaky2:

Sometimes an otherwise healthy tree has a few thinnish dead limbs sticking out, these are my favorite, they're as hard as nails, have been up in the treetop for donkeys years, and burn with a heat that will warp the firebars.

Hawthorn is terrific, anything dry is good but Hawthorn probably has the edge.

I've some plum to burn and it's been disappointing in that it won't burn quickly enough in the cooker to heat the water sufficiently. Thinking it might do better in the soon to be commissioned stove.

Never burned oak yet, but have four (free) loads of it left by to season for next year.
