"most good tree surgeons will be members of the Arb Association"

This really irritates me! Ms Browne could potentially be taking work away from the good, "bone fide" tree surgeons of Tavistock that are not AA approved contractors.

It doesn't mention most will be approved contractors only that most will be 'members of the Arb association' which is not the same thing and IMO would have been a poorer statement. Anyone can be a member of the Arb association.

You're right it doesn't.........my bad. My argument still stands though, are most good tree surgeons members of the Arb Association?

It's all very well resenting this sort of ill-informed journalism, but is someone going to send a stiffly worded letter to the paper that they can publish, one that will set the record straight? What makes a "bona fide" tree surgeon? I would say qualified, insured, experienced, licensed waste carrier and accountable by having a permanent office base with a land line number.

+1 go and send them one putting it straight.

Oops, hoping the heat's gone out of the situation a little bit :confused1:

Whilst it's not a legal requirement to be 'ARB Approved', or indeed a member, perhaps like the CORGI registered plumber it is a, convenient, and relevant point of reference for Local Authorities (LAs) to direct people to. Further it is one I am becoming increasingly aware of as many LAs now direct enquirers to the AA website when looking for a 'tree surgeon'.

In reality what they are also seeking to do is further marginalise the disreputable 'rogues' in society who would never normally consider a 3rd party accreditation such as ARB Approved...and YES, including yourselves, there are many, in fact the majority (currently), of reputable tree surgeons who are not ARB Approved but what other, readily available and recognised, benchmark can they use?

Lastly, please have a look at the scheme and how it might benefit your business, not least in the process of organising and preparing for assessment by using the publicised standards (see below), rather than simply dismissing it outright...thank you.

Cheers..:thumbup1:

Nowt against the AA Paul, at all. There are more general bodies such as Trust Mark, and Federation for Small Businesses, and whilst I don't know much about any of these bodies, including yours, I pride myself on being good at my job.

Such a sweeping statement from the reporter could be potentially damaging for the local firms who do a grand job independant of these governing bodies.

If "anyone" can be a member of the AA (as suggested above by an earlier poster) than how does that form any kind of distinction?

Might be a silly question but with the council slapping TPO's on anything and everything could this be a honest mistake by a non rogue who forgot to ask the customer whether it had a TPO or not? I wouldn't expect a Silver Birch to have a TPO

I'm braced to be ridiculed if necessary....
