Looking at the stepped nature of the external surface, and the internal surface which shows a series of regular straight lines, I suspect it's real but made up of a series of segments and layers.

I don't think its photo shopped but yes its definitely segmented, seen large bowls made in that way before but never this size.

He's going to have to build another platform to smooth the inside..

i dream of being able to do one of them one day but i doubt it will be that big. looks to be 9' by my reckoning.

I've just started turning but that's awesome. Most of my attempts to date have either split, or when attempting turning a bowl they are flying off the lathe whenever I make contact with the bowl gauge.

It would appear he is using the tractors rear wheel as a face plate and the tractor as a lathe ... 100 + HP that is some lathe !!!!! The bowl is built up of segments as you can see , I have seen someone turn a 6 foot dia bath this way years ago , but the way the wood presents itself to the chisel leads to a lot of splinters and tear outs .... not easy at all .. lots of sanding ...

just thought i'd show everyone the potential of some of the stuff that generally gets thrown on the fire or chipped.

 

these are all laurel bowls, prunus laurocerasus.

 

these were all turned at differing points in the rot process the freshest being the two nests of three that were quite wet when cut. all the little ones were about 6 months dry i believe and had been kept off the ground but had some discolouration in them. the oldest bit in case you hadn't guessed its the multicoloured orange and black bowl that i think must have been in contact with the ground and was much drier than the other bits.

 

you wouldn't think they were the same wood, would you...

Just found a lathe and tools going cheap, it's not massive but its a start.

Got some cherry logs that haven't split yet, and its not long been cut. Any tips?
