Hard to go wrong with a Ford focus. I bought one about 8 years ago for 3K just sold it last week for £750. Did not do that many miles but fantastic to drive and the 1.8 diesel did about 48mpg. Easy service and good clear usable space inside. Liked it so much just bought a newer one as replacement.

I cant rate my Volvo v70 highly enough. Its comfort and build are fantastic, 2.4 petrol 170bhp is like a rocket, 30 ish mpg but i thrash it a fair bit. Loads of room, leather seats are heated and easy to wipe dog hair and saw chip off.

It is really well thought out design, and really solid, the stereo is great, I love it!

Entirely agree. Mine is the older 2.4 diesel but again it's the SE (heated seats etc). Comfortable, well designed and really shifts when you want it to. I get around 50mpg on average, and is surprisingly good with a fully loaded (1.8 ton gross) plant trailer on the back, at around 40mpg.

Worth noting that they changed the engine around when the 2.0l diesel became available and the later one is apparently not as good. It's about an 07 plate where the change was, so won't be affected within your budget.
