Building a walnut box

that's some great work and a lovely box to show for all of your effort and skill. No idea of what it would be worth.

Out of interest, what is the person who commissioned it going to use it for?

I think they are having a ceremony where family members write letters to the clients daughter and they will be locked in the box and given to her on her 18th birthday. At least that's what I think is happening but I did get a bit lost when it was explained to me :blushing:

Done some last minute modification as it looked just a bit dull. Have added a piece of cherry around the key hole. For me it has made a big difference and brought it to life. The finish is Liberon finishing oil with a coat of Briwax to add a bit more of a glossy sheen as mat just looked a bit plane.

So what do you think it is worth? It's 18" wide to give some idea on size.

There are no wrong answers and I won't be offended if you say not allot. Its just useful for me to get an impartial view of my work.

After a few suggestions I will own up to many hours it has taken.

Thanks

Well they are coming to collect today and I am going to ask half way between my top estimate and what it has cost. I have done too many bargains over the years and can't keep giving my work away. It either has to pay or I don't do it anymore. The daft thing is I can easily earn £18 an hour doing chippy work but when it comes to cabinetmaking it's hard to actually charge £15 and in reality this often ends up less as this job shows.

To be fair boxes and chairs are very labour intensive so never look good value. Making tables on the other hand always look much better with large expanses of wood but often with far less joints than this box and a darn site less fiddly. I know you win some and lose some but I have got to learn to win a few more

Hope the thread gave you some insight James. Maybe stick at what you do as this stuff is PITA :laugh1:

I am not really complaining I could be stuck at a desk like millions of others. Now that would a rubbish way to live IMO.
