Mate, you can put whatever oil you like in your saws. The best advice on here says use specifically manufactured saw chain oil, it's your choice if you wish to ignore it. Tree men in general just love to take the mick, it gets us through the day, don't give them more ammo

What about dropping the sump oil,using that as chain oil , then taking the sump completely off and scraping out the settled gunk, putting that in a grease cartridge and greasing all the points on your £30,000 grinder.

Never thought of using the sludge as grease, now your talking. Kerching....

A few years ago I was in a pickle with money and used old engine oil for a while, maybe a year, I suffered no problems with pumps or wear of bars etc, it is messy but more importantly its loaded with carcinogen, So I stopped. I bet they use it in developing countries though where life is cheap. Clean or new engine oil is fine, my old boss bought halfords own all the time. I don't think he realized it was pricier than the proper stuff!

Been there,done that!! Don't do it, get proper chain oil or at least clean oil, old oil is manky:thumbdown:

Since I started using ONLY rapeseed oil, the machines got CLEANER! NOT GUMMED UP!

Since I started using rapeseed oil, I got MORE CHAINS OUT OF A BAR! THE WEAR ON THE BAR AND CHAINS IS LESS!

Since I started using rapeseed oil, I PAY A FRACTION ON OIL!

Since i started using rapeseed oil, I'm NOT POLLUTING MY AND YOUR ENVIRONMENT!
