Tipper insurance

Morning all,

Just thought I would share this with you and hopefully none else is in the same situation.

I was sorting out public liability insurance this week and it was just as I was finalising the details of the policy with the guy from Trust, that he asked me when my truck insurance was due, I explained that I had just taken out a policy with a company through a comparison web site. Now for those of you that are old hands at this game alarm bells may well be ringing. The guy from Trust then enquired as to the company and asked if I was sure they insured tippers, I explained that I had filled the form in and specified under "body Type" Tipper. He urged me to check the paper work they had sent me and said that it may well be ok but work checking.

To cut an already long story a bit shorter, the paper work said "body type: Van" so I phoned up to queiry this, the lady on the phone didnt know the difference between a van and a tipper and said "I'm sure it will be fine" when pushed a bit further she checked with her manager and turns out they dont insure them.

Where the confusion lies is that when they put the reg through their system it comes up as a van, as originally it was a BT box van and has later had the tipping gear added after BT fininshed with it. Obviously I did not realise this untill I look at the V5.

So the long and the short of it is, it has cost £130.00 to cancel a policy I had for 19 days. Why? because I said on the form it was not modified and it is, thus supplying, albeit unknowingly, false information, so had to pay the cancellation fine.

I am now insured with Trust as the vehicle is, and for its correct use, towing, flammable liquids etc.

I would recommend anyone who has done similar to me in insuring this type of vehicle to check and double check your insurance, because the consequences of not being insured can be a hell of a lot worse than this.

Thanks to the man at Trust for pointing it out.

A very important and expensive lesson learned......
