I am a victim of this fault. The saw is 6 months out of warrantee(18 months old) and is essentially a right off!!

I have bought 3 261s in the last 18 months so can only pray that this does not happen to all of them!!

I bought a 2009 one and had the clutch drum/bearing problems. Also a few problems idling etc.

The dealer I bought it from was useless, even though within a year of purchase. I had to go to another dealer the day before my cs30/31 assessment for a replacement needle bearing who eventually spotted and replaced the clutch, crank etc and fitted an improved carb.

Now I own a brilliant saw whereas before it was a ropey old (actually new and expensive) piece of crap.

If all three go then That may be enough to knock me out for good!! Not impressed as this is claimed to be a professional piece of kit! I had the old 260 for 5 years of hard work and it was great so I only presumed that the new and improved would be just that and more!!

Is it me or does all the new kit seam to tick all the boxes on paper with co2 emissions and so on but the price for that is poor build quality and very bad performance?

I've had similar issues with ms201s and a long reach hedge cutter all purchased in the last 18months.

I think stihl may be slipping down a slippery slope and opening up a huge opportunity for its competitors...

I think if you have to meet new emission regs you are going to get a drop off in performance but hat is no excuse for poor build quality .....

We have two 261's (2year old) on the shelf needing new cranks, they ate bearings like a kid with chocolate,
