Shoulder Operation

Hi all,

My should has dislocated twice in the past few months, I went to the doctor and they referred me to a specialst.

I saw the specialist today and he did a few test. His discision was that he would give me a MRI scan and see in detail what is going on. Following that he would either do physiotherapy or keyhole surgury. As I am only 18 and finishing A levels I do not want my shoulder to be dislocating on a regular baisis because it takes a couple of days for the pain to go.

I was just seeing if anyone else has had key hole surgury on their shoulder or any other part of the body as I am wondering if it is worth all of the hastle?

I dislocated my shoulder pretty badly while playing rugby as a lad. It was sore or weeks and every now and then it would have a minor dislocation where it would just seem to drop out and pop back in. I never had keyhole surgery as they thought I was young and skinny enough to put some muscle on and train it in to shape. It's never happened again since I have been rock climbing, although my collar bone is permanently un fixed at my neck, it just floats, doesn't bother me though. Just a bit grim.

Sent using my pudgy fingers on my phone.

It depends what they find wrong.

The best thing to do is grill the specialists on the pros and cons of it.

The human body is amazing at repairing itself or adapting to injuries where you find other ways of doing things - you just need a clear understanding of what is wrong, if it will eventually fix itself (maybe if you build up the right muscles with specific exercises).

Everyone is different so without knowing all the details can only suggest good talk with the medics.

Hi Mate, I think Pie eater Pete on here had keyhole surgery sometime last year for a torn labrum/ ligament damage- could be worth pm'ing him?

Personally I have dislocated both my shoulders playing rugby and one got so bad that in a given position it would literally fall out of joint (labrum had come away from the glenoid in on position). I had open surgery which is a longer recovery and meant a month stuck in a sling then 4-5 months of physiotherapy. I believe the recovery from keyhole is much faster. Speak to your surgeon and physio as well. It's a graduated recovery so you're not totally inactive for all this time.

Do not fall into the trap of thinking that building muscle in the shoulder will help its stability. That comes from the labrum and the rotator cuff muscles/ tendons

All the best with it and personally I would bite the bullet and get it done- at a longest 6 months recovery isn't really a long time in the grand scheme of things

sounds like a rotator cuff job, had it done, day surgery job, 2 years of pain and problems solved, took about 3 months to heal and give me full motion back, but well worth it

How soon were you back to work after the opp?

I have worn out my shoulders with too much far work /gardening. ultrasound at age 46 showed typical wear of 50% of 60 years old. I became paraplegic age 46 so shoulders very important now. One shoulder fixed by keyhole.I was pushing the wheelchair after 3 weeks and back at work as groundsman after 6 weeks. Still thinking about having the other one done!

What hassle? Keyhole is way less invasive than traditional techniques, you are a teenager in full time education FFS, you will heal quick. Man up and move on.

My H&S officer had his shoulder start to dislocate more and more regularly so had the operation to deal to it. No issues since. 3 months off physical work and intensive physio before and after. Spent a week in a sling so couldn't sleep on his side or back for the first week but reckons it was absolutely worth it.

My shoulder is also shot. Just had a cortisone injection into the bursar to kill the pain but in this job it only masks it for a while and after a hard or heavy day it still aches. I've been pretty bad on the physio so I have to get on to the that before they'll operate. Just make sure if they tell you to do the physio, you do it, otherwise they might think twice about the op.

All those saying to get it done..I had mine done a year since last January. Did 3 months of physio and exercising to regain strength and movement. If I'd known it was gonna be this bad I'd not have bothered. Can't sleep at night with arms above my head and strength is nowhere near what it was.
