  1. Been burning Willow most of the winter here- stuff that was cut and split about 18 months ago. When we split it, water was running out of the logs. Dried well but isn't a very dense wood so although it burns well and gives off decent heat it seems like I'm forever loading the stove...
  2. Their start time will dictate when they are paid from genereally ie if they had to come to your yard then drive 3 hours to site then they should be paid for this, same as if they came to your yard and drove to a job 20 minutes away, it amounts to the same thing and if you are looking at work with further travel time that it should be costed in accordingly. You might not win the work because of this but if you decide to take the contract on then it comes off your bottom line not your employees. As far as sick pay goes, then doctors note for more the standard allowed for self certification, think that's 5 days now but if you injure yourself at work leading extended time away then it's standard SSP. If you continue to pay the employee at their full rate, you are admitting liability for their injury (if self inflicted) and your insurers will be looking at a rather large payout.
  3. His account slightly different to yours!
  4. So who was on the Tanker then- you or Mark?
  5. Gransfors splitting maul for me, handle could do with being just a shade longer though
  6. Had a 25" on my 880 a while back and it fairly flew through the timber. Was fun for about 10 minutes then the weight of the saw started to kick in and the novelty wore off.
  7. Got a 372XP running a 25" bar and an MS880 + 36" bar. How big is the stuff you need to be cutting? Had the 880 firing into some 5' dia oak today-flew through it. TBH after spedng time on the 880 the husqy feels like a little toy!
  8. Hi Mate, I think Pie eater Pete on here had keyhole surgery sometime last year for a torn labrum/ ligament damage- could be worth pm'ing him? Personally I have dislocated both my shoulders playing rugby and one got so bad that in a given position it would literally fall out of joint (labrum had come away from the glenoid in on position). I had open surgery which is a longer recovery and meant a month stuck in a sling then 4-5 months of physiotherapy. I believe the recovery from keyhole is much faster. Speak to your surgeon and physio as well. It's a graduated recovery so you're not totally inactive for all this time. Do not fall into the trap of thinking that building muscle in the shoulder will help its stability. That comes from the labrum and the rotator cuff muscles/ tendons All the best with it and personally I would bite the bullet and get it done- at a longest 6 months recovery isn't really a long time in the grand scheme of things
  9. Don't remember any Leylands I worked on having a dipstick for the back end oil. From memory there's a level bolt on the left hand side of the rear casing just above PTO level. 13/1/2" spanner if I recall correctly. From the symptoms you describe it certainly sounds like lack of oil in the back end. Apologies if it sounds like teaching your mate to suck eggs but he isn't dipping the engine oil assuming one reservoir covers all is he?
  10. Have had a 25" on the 880- that really does fly. You should try in Jon!
  11. How much time do you have? Personally I would draw them out accurately and then go to my local metal profiler and get them to cut me some- shouldn't really be costing much more then £30 odd. Realise there's a bit of your time to invest at the start but keep the drawing to hand and you can re order easily every time you need a set.
  12. Why not have a word with James at Shopland Sawmills? Sure he'd be able to sort something out for you? Here's the link: Shopland Sawmills - Clevedon's Specialist Timber Merchants | Home
  13. I go straight through on the A38 or up through Sandford
  14. Drive through Churchill every morning.... It's tough but that's the way things are just now. Money does funny things to people and countries
  15. Hi Jon, I've made my own version of the hycrack splitter- same principle and I'm well pleased with it- makes the engine on my JD2850 grunt a bit when there's a tough bit, but have yet to find anything it won't deal with as long as you think how you get about splitting the awkward stuff. You're not too far away why not pop over and try it out, you'll get a fair idea then?
  16. Hi Woodworks, yes I know what you mean about the potential for harm- it's a pretty nasty piece of kit potentially- I feel the same about circular saws- reckon they're the devil's work and wont use one!
  17. Morning All, Following on from the "show us your splitters" thread, I'd be interested to know fellow Arbtalkers thoughts on the 2 different types of splitter. For years I have run hydraulic ones in varying shapes and sizes and always turned my nose up at the rotary screw type ones like Hycrack. As we were quiet I knocked up my own with some parts from the bay and I'm absolutely amazed about how quickly the thing eats though the logs, splits just about anything and the clincher for me is the convenient working height. Don't get me wrong, the hydraulic one still has it's place and with 2 operators, one feeding and one operating it's also very quick but that means 2 people and 2 wages for proportionally not double the output per hour (my experience anyway) I understand that this is really aimed at those who use their tractors as the power source- what are your experiences with the two types?
  18. Ditto Jon! Smalle stuff seems to be able to grow legs and walk out the yard too easily. How you getting on with the 880? I've got one, beast of a saw!
  19. Hi Cordwood- bought them as a kit off the bay. Was a tad worried about the quality of the steel but I really can't fault the quality of the cone etc.
  20. I hate rats, the one creature that properly makes my skin crawl. Good luck with the .410!
  21. Here's my latest splitter- knowcked it up in the workshop last week and been using it all afternoon, no faults as yet and certainly much quicker than the hydraulic one i have. Big plus point for me is running it at a convenient height so you're not bent double all day long...
  22. Here's a couple of mine... it's an old crowd/ tilt ram from a JCB Loadall with PTO pump and it's own tank. Made it up as I went along but pretty pleased with the end result and if the wood doesn't split it just cuts it's way through
  23. Not into firewood in a big way at all, just sell a few loads to recoup the cost of purchasing so my own is free. Got some lovely Ash, identical loads and within 5 minutes of each other tonight i had one customer telling me they couldn't get it to burn and the other saying how pleased they were and how they couldn't stay in the room it was so hot- go figure that one out
