The issue I had was that they were sometimes reluctant to come out of 4wd.

 

I had to do a lot of reversing to and fro to make it click back.

Do you know what it was? I suppose with an electrical system it could be the switches, the senor or could be the motor that does the changing.

 

I'm all for advances in technology but sometimes you just want some basic mechanical engineering. I have a 745i and the electronics on it are bewildering. Fault finding is a mammoth task.

Why cannot they just give you a proper transfer box gear knob. That's why I went with a 08 one

Yup 60 plate one here with manual gear knob. Balls to all these switches

Good motor 148000 on mine 09 plate. Good point if the cam belt goes 09 onwards the engine design is for it NOT TO CLATTER. Mine went in France only cost the belt kit and it is the easiest I have ever fitted ( ex motor mechanic)

Bad point the gearbox tends to drop out of top gear when accelerating I have had two they both did it and friend has one, his started doing it. All I do is on long journeys is stick my knee behind the gear lever.

Could you mean that if I spin the wheels a bit on mud it'll "unwind" and be easier to come out of 4wd?
