I'm in the 'burn it out' camp. But if you are not wanting to fill your house with smoke, how about going up on the roof with a piece of oily rag, light that and drop it down the chimney. Mind you, if your liner is knackered and this starts a fire in the chimney, that could end up being not at all pretty... But then I guess the same goes for any of the burning options.

With an old wire coat hanger form it into an arrow shape. attach to rods push it up the wire will give enough to push past the brush then slowly pull down, just make sure you try to keep the rounded edges on the arrow shape so that it doesn't catch on the ribs of the liner
