Im a Topper!

Lots of arborist or related workers around here who seem to have either present or past ties to the logging industry, and generally talk in those kinds of descriptive terms.

I was speaking with the owner in a local saw shop who’s also breaking into arborist hardware of recent. After about 10 minutes of explaining my role as a contract climber, he interrupted.... “ so you’re a topper?”.....I paused, and then replied, “ yeah....that’s right, I’m a topper”. I just couldn’t be bothered going any further. So be it.

Some headcam views from the last couple of months, been a pretty good spring all-in-all

I’m going to miss the trade shows this year, and what’s worse is that I never even made it to Jonsie’s in the past. I also find it curious to hear people actually complaining that’s its always the same old thing etc. Well, a very rare opportunity to catch up and kick back with friends and acquaintances, not to mention make new ones....eat, drink beer, shop....sounds terrible alright. For those who are going, have a great time.

Your a top topper Reg.

Some nice rigging in there, I like your double line set-up on the multiple trees. Worked over quite a distance by the look of things.

Thanks. But did you make out the portable winch was actually dragging/lifting those limbs mid air at the far rigging point Pete? I assume so because I was there but not sure if its obvious on the video. Only way it could have worked and saved us about 5 hours labour otherwise.

Yes, that's what I liked about the set-up. :thumbup1:

Reg

how come your tied D to D for taking those tops out? particularly the likes of the tree at 2.55? (that backcut - not a great ad for the 201 )

anyway, what about the tree splitting pinning you against the stationary trunk? the old lanyard 'circle of death' routine?

I know avoidance of this incident mainly comes from good decision making with choice/execution of cuts/side cuts below the horizontal face cut etc. Also how the tree is brought down (ie in small sections), but I'll nearly always be on my front attachment point when taking a top out like the one at 2.55.

Looking at those skinny tops at the start I'd be tied D to D for them purely for better stability. Liking the branches left on thing for dampening to limit movement of the stem by the way.

pic of vertical split stem, it can happen and does.
