Lost my last job coz a climber just threw from a tree without looking or calling, branch hit me so called him down and exchanged fists, bosses nefew or some crap like that so I got sacked and he carried on climbing. Never be in that situation again.

I work ground crew and don't climb, my job is looking after the chipper making sure only wood goes in it and maintaining saws vehicles etc. shoulder still hurts in cold weather now.

G'day all

New lad on trial yesterday, he has been doingg pretty well up until he left an 046 under the tree and the climber dropped a large branch on it, saw cattle trucked, would you make him pay / the climber a share.. ?

does anyone have a broken 046 with a good back handle / carb / sidecase they would like to sell me / in surrey ?

My inclination is to have him pay half the repair or replacement cost..

Dave

you cant make him pay for it,, thats what insurance is for.

Oh lordy, this is an age old employee v employer problem.

If staff are heavy on gear because they are careless, they should pay for it. That will focus the mind.

ANYONE can break gear by mistake, it just sometimes happen.

Sleeping on these issues and assess how you feel about the guy the following day usually works out well for every one.

(then fire him anyway!)

I'm pretty sure that not legal, unless its in their contract and even then a decent lawyer would wipe the floor with you if you tried.

If you staff are heavy on gear get new staff.

The lad has made a BIG mistake, don't get me wrong.

BUT

A climber dropping a large limb without even a glance into the drop zone, especially when a new lad is working, is a bloody idiot.

Climbers who just bomb loads of stuff down into the DZ with no consideration for the ground crew and giving them time to deal with it are a PITA.

Hama is right, Mesterh is wrong.

I'd give the lad a good rogering without lube and make him carry the broken saw everywhere with him for three months.

I bet he doesn't do it again.

Thats nothing new.:laugh1:

Although, why look at the dz every time you drop something out?

If you know where your staff are and you know there is not going to be anyone else in the dz its just time wasting, I do loads of cutting, chucking and swinging stuff without looking when I know where its going to land.

Different if its over a road or pedestrian area etc, well sort of but then I rely on staff to keep the coast clear when told.

I totally agree with your sentence about bombing stuff out etc.

As for not using lube though.
