I'm completely at home on a set of spikes. Up, down, round and about

Its just a shame that these days people get worked up about use spiking trees that are being retained.

 

Back in the day your spikes went on with your harness.

 

I did my own test 8+ years ago and spiked up a large Ash tree . Which is on a friends farm . I put some harsh gaff marks down that stem . To this day the tree remains healthy and all gaff wounds have healed over lovely . This Ash tree wasn't a brilliant specimen back then and still it hasn't got any worse for spiking it ?

Anyone ever use those dodgy komet spikes . The ones where the gaffs came out at a weird angle ? Because they were rubbish

Does anyone else just really dislike the concept of spiking? i can't seem to get on with it at all, just feels really odd, guess it just comes with practice...

There an invaluble piece of kit. It is just practise , you'll get the hang of it. I wouldn't do a dismantle without them tbh , so much safer and save so much time and effort.

 

I do remember the first time i used them though , shat my pants , i'm not going to lie. And there were so uncomfortable (poorly adjusted) , i use caddy pads now and there like having a sofa strapped to your leg. Geckos are supposed to be very comfortable though.

 

The only comfort tips i can give you is do the lower straps up as tight as you can , helps if you wiggle your ankle around to take up the slack then re-tighten. Top straps not to tight. Adjust the length so there close to your knee , around a couple of cms below and you'll be good to go.

Don't give up with the spikes. They make most jobs a lot easier, and safer. Like someone else said, when you tighten up the bottom straps, have a walk about and then retighten.

i always wrap my strap round the shank aswell when fastening seems to stop alot of movement and discomfort!

I loved spiking in my training...until i fell on them put the shits up me took a while for the flip line to grip again...if your unsure put your climbing line around the tree as well as this tightens a lot quicker than flip line if you slip! gona take me a while to get on with them again!
