spikes are awsome but thats co's i started on them, i can do a tree now and you can't see any marks, but thats co's i only stick em' in when i need to and they'er ultra sharp ,but that come's with experience.

if your not used to them ,to gain more experience use them on conifers poplar and pine but make sure just the tips are sharp not the three main edges(sometimes your rope lies just in front of your heel) and don't slam them in just place them and apply your weight.

Don't know about a steel shank but if you want a pair of boots that'll stand up to spending all day on a set of spikes you can't go past the Klimba Air Tirrols. I prefer my Meindles but the Klimbas were just awesome for days on end with spikes on.

Thanks for that Taupo. I will definitely go for those then. I'm currently using meindl waldläufers and they are like slippers, great for climbing but a bit soft for all day spiking.

i think it depends on the qaulity of spikes,i used to have a set of bashlins with the velcro pads and medium spurs.these were the dogs felt so confident in thembut they got nicked and ive got a cheaper crappy pair now with the long gaffs which are useless in most hardwoods.also got shorter gaffs for them but they are too short?!!

thinking of going back to the bashlins asap as just dont feel confident on these others!!!
