The police have a tough job, but they don't help themselves.

 

I think it's good that they stopped a couple of young lads, and asked questions about the gear they were carrying, but a couple of phonecalls would have sorted this out.

 

My old groundie got a tug last year and the copper asked to see his licence for his chainsaw. WTF?

 

Perhaps we'd have a better opinion of them if they put the same effort into pulling over dodgy looking trucks offering 'Proffesional Tree Lopping and Tarmaccing'.

They also emptied the fuel tank, as apparently it was a fire risk!

 

Makes you wonder what they did with it, drain, kitchen sink, water course or do they have suitable container at the station which is more suitable than the fuel tank designed by the manufacturer.

I think the attitude of the copper even after it was all explained to him says it all. 'the sergeant I spoke to said was that if it had been him who stopped my brother he would have been arrested and charged!'

What abouts the lack of a receipt for taking the items?

 

While it may be different in England I am led to believe that in Scotland at least the police are under no obligation to issue receipts for items or evidence seized.

Hi. Sorry for late response, it's because I have been working! I did get the stuff back. I asked why it was taken, and was told that any bladed instrument is illegal to carry if you don't have lawful authority! I pointed out they were tools and was told they weren't tools as my brother wasn't driving to work. I did take down all the invoices and stuff, but they wernt interested in that. All the sergeant I spoke to said was that if it had been him who stopped my brother he would have been arrested and charged! Apparently we both got off lucky. Either way, I did speak to my brother at great length. I don't think he was hobby, but was told he was also taking his friend to get some smokes, who isnt all that popular with the boys in blue! They also emptied the fuel tank, as apparently it was a fire risk!

 

I think I would want to discuss this with my local councillor and maybe drop my MP a line. There has to be better things for the cops to do and as others have said a couple of phone calls could have sorted this out easy enough.

 

The attitude from the sargeant is laughable.

I used to be old bill so I'm particulalrly vexed by this one! Offensive weapons are classified as items made or intended to cause injury to others. As saws are made to cut wood I would be suprised that these have been seized, especially if your brother explained what you did for a living. If it had been a works van, there is no way I would have gone down that road, and even if it was a private car, as soon as I knew the profession of the owner that would have been job done. Always a sticky wicket carrying items like that in a car, especially at night (why would you need to be carrying a chainsaw at night?) and also there is the insurance issue, would you be covered if they were stolen from your car? I digress, the only reason I could think of a seizure would be if they were suspected of being stolen, but if so they would have nicked your brother, so I really am at a loss with this one. Probably a jobsworth proby PC who thought he was doing the right thing. Very strange indeed. Get down there, stamp your feet bang the desk but don't swear, you will get potted for that! Good luck...
